FILLING-END CLEARER.
' Application fiieanayia, 1925. Serial 110,109,039.
Thisinvention relates to replenish ing looms and -more particularly to filling end clearers employediinlsuch looms to withdraw theifilling end from the shuttle on call for replenishment tolprevent the production of imperfect cloth.
It has heretofore been proposed to provide filling replenishing loomsVwith-filling end clearers in which filling catcher has; been mounted in front of the lay, and the filling end clearer has beenkmounte dupon the lay to pass frontwardly of the V filling end catcher on beat-upmovementjofthe lay to permit the discharged filling carrier to pass between the catcher and clearer upon replenishment of filling. a v
In looms of this general character it some-. times happens that the filling carrier or bobbin itself may be caught between the filling end catcher and the filling end clearer, and in such case a smash is liable to occurasthe lay goes back after replenishment of filling; i
V One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a filling end catcher and a filling end clearer wherein means are embodied to prevent a; smash should thefilling carrier or bobbin be: caught between the filling end catcher and the filling end clearer as the lay goes back after replenishment of filling. I or g In accordance with thepresent invention,
the filling end catcher is mounted infront.
of the lay and the filling end clearer is mounted upon thelay topass frontwardly of the filling end catcher on heat-up moveinent of the lay, andso mounted upon the lay that sho'uldfa filling carrier or bobbin caught betwen the catcher and clearer, theilatter may yield in the plane of movement-of the lay as Ithelatter goes back after replenishment, to prevent the occurrence of a smash or breakage of parts. I V
The invention andnew features thereof will best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings of one good form thereof. 1 U 1 3' In the'drawing'sL,
. Fig. 1 is a perspaav tview new filling replenishing side of" the loom showing the present invention assoeiatedtherewith; and
V Fig. 2 is aidetail planzview showing therelation of parts when a "filling carrier or bobbin gets caught between the fillingend catcher and filling end clearer'askthe lay goes back following replenishment'of filling.
The loomjillustrated in the accompanying drawing may be of the usual automatically,
filling replenishing type, comprising'a frame ilzwhich'supports at its replenishing side a hopper stand 2 provided with the rotary hopper 3 which'carries the usual series of fresh filling carriers 4 adapted to be successively presented abovethe'lay when the, lattcrisin transferringposition.
, '=The' transferring'mechanismcomprises the usual transfer-arm 5' wh1chv is pivotally mounted upon a .stud.6 carried by the hop- Which is pivoted a dog '8 adapted to engage per stand 2, saidtransferringarm being provided. with a downward extenslon 7 upon the usual bunter on the lay whenfilling res plenishment is tobe effected. The parts so fandescribedare "or may be of usual'c'on-y struction and further explanation thereof the filling end catcher is mounted, upon the loom frame in front of the lay, and when the; lay moves frontwardly the fillingend catcher 1 takes a. position back of the bottom opening.
in: the shuttle box, 'so'that the ejected filling 1 carrier may pass frontwardly of thefillingj 7 end catcher. 'In thepresent instance: of. the i invention, theffilling end catcher .llflis mounted upon the stud or; dead *shaftglQ extending from the loom frame,',a-nd such,
'The fillingend catcher ll is pivotally mounted for yielding movement-towards enditis under the influence of; a spring .l 5
filling end catcher is provided with afllater ally .extendingwarm 13 which may be-',provided-with a series of teeth 14 forengagee *ment of gthe filling end (1 extending from the shuttle to the ejected filling carrier. or i 'bobbin'b, as indicated in Fig. 1.;5
ids andjfrom the front of the loom; and to'this t,
- shown and explained in the patent to Edward S. Stimps on, Elm 1,422,728, datedxq'luly Mountediupon the lay is the filling end clearer which on frontward movement of the lay passes frontwardly of the filling end catcher a 'sufiicient distance topermit the ejected filling carrier or bobbin to pass between it and the ifilling end catcher, so that on backward movement of the lay'foll'ow ng replenishmena the filling end maybe given a backward'bend about the filling end catch er as the filling'end clearer recedes or moves backward with the lay. v i
The filling end clearer comprises an arm 17 carried by the lay, and as the lay moves frontwardly the filling .end clearer passes below and closely adjacent to the laterally extending arm 13 of the filling end catcher so that should the discharged filling carrier or bobbin be ejected from the shuttle at such times, it will pass between the filling end catcher and filling end clearer and on backward movement of thelay the filling end a will be given a whip-like'movement to withdraw it from the shuttle and shuttle box.
It sometimes happens, however, that a filling carrier or bobbin will get caught between the filling end catcher and filling end clearer, and one of the important features of the present invention is to provide a construction which, unoer such conditions, will prevent the smash or breakage of parts.
In accordance with the present invention, therefore, the filling end clearer or arm 17 is mounted upon a pivotal support carried by the lay, the axis of which support is vertical with respect to the lay race, with the result that the filling end clearer may yield frontwardly in a plane parallel'to the lay 'movem ent should a filling carrier or bobbin ,befcaught between the catcher and clearer, and such frontward swinging movement of the filling end clearer in a plane parallel .to lay movement, enables the filling end clearerto disengage t'hefilling carrier or bobbin as the lay goes back after replenish- 11181111;
More specifically stated, the lay is provided with a bracket 18 which may be adjustably secured thereto by a bolt 19 passing through an'elongated slot 20 formed in the "bracket, and extending from the bracket is" a lug 21 in which is securedthe pin 22 constituting the axis of swinging movement of the clearer. The clearer or arm 17 is mounted upon the pin 22 for swinging move ment in the plane parallel to lay movement, and may be conveniently secured in position on the pin .22 by a head'23 formed on the pin 22.
The clearer or arm 17 is'normally under the influence of a spring tending to mains tain the clearer or arm 17 in its normal position. 'ln'the'present instance of the invention, the pin 22 is secured to the lug 21 by a cotter-pin 2 1 and a spring 25 placed about the pin 22 has one secured to the lug21 and the other end secured at 26 to the arm or clearer 17, the construction being such that the normal action of the spring 25 is to maintain the clearer in its normal position, as indicated in Fig. 1. g f
"desired, a washer or sleeve 27 may be interposed between the hub portion of the clearer or arm 17 and the lug 21 in order to protect the spring from foreign' matter. The arm 17 is provided with a stop 28 which, under the action of the spring 25, normally rests against the face of the bracket 18, as indicated in F 1. As h'ereinbefore noted, the axial support for the movement ofthe swinging arm 17 is vertical-with-respect to the lay or lay race and consequently the swinging movement of the clearer or arm 17 is in the direction of lay movement, so
that should a filling carrier or bobbin be caught between the filling end catcher and the filling end clearer after replenishment of filling, the clearer or arm 17 may yield in the plane of lay movement'as the lay goes back, and finally be drawn across and treed from the filling carrier or bobbin to permit the latter to drop when thelay has approached or is in its rear position.
The action of the parts in preventing a smash is represented in. detail in Fig. 2, wherein it will be noted that the lay ismoving'backwardly and the filling carrier or bobbin 6 has beencaught between the filling end catcher and the filling end clearer when the lay wasin front position. As the lay continues its backward movement, as indicated by the arrowin Fig. 2, the filling end clearer or arm 17'will be drawn across and finally freed from the trapped filling carrier or bobbin and thereby prevent a smash or breaking of parts;
Since it is desirable that the filling end' lll! It will also be obvious'that when a filling carrier or bobbin has been trapped, as indicated in F '2, and the laymoves backward to disengage the filling end clearer from the bobbin or filling carrier, the spring from the discharged filling carrier as the dischargeof fil lay goes back and the filling end clearer is drawn across and freed from the filling carrier or bobbin.
