FILLING-END CONTROLLER.

This invention relates to filling replenishing looms and is more especially directed to the means for controlling the filling ends on replenishment of filling that they may not be carried into the cloth.
It is now the common practice to provide filling replenishing looms with means for preventing the incoming or outgoing filling end from being taken into the shed with the shuttle on a subsequent pick after replenishment. Should either of the pieces of fill ing end he carried into the shed, defective cloth will result.
The outgoing filling end is very frequently carried with the ejected bobbin and withdrawn from the shuttle box and shuttle eye. but dependence cannot always be placed upon this conditional operation (.Qpecially with some characters or kinds of filling.
The incoming filling end which is usually secured to some fixed point, such as the outer end of the hopper or hopper stand,- presents some difiiculties also in preventing the part of the filling leading from the fixed point to the cloth selvage from being taken into the shed on a subsequent pick following replenishment.
The present invention has for one of its objects to provide means for taking care of and controlling the filling end whether it be the incoming or outgoing filling end. to prevent either from being taken into the shed.
More particularly the present invention provides a filling cnd controller which shall have an oscillatory movement upon a fixed point or pivot and so connected to the lay that upon movement of the latter the filling end controller will be given a sweeping movement to engage and withdraw the filling end from the lay.
The various features of the invention and new combination of parts will best be made clear from the following description and the accompanying drawings of one good form thereof.

The loom frame 1 may be of usual construction and mounted atone side thereof is the hopper stand 2 in which a number of filling carriers or bobbins 3 are carried. The end a of the filling leading from the filling carriers in the hopper is herein shown as carried over a disk 4 and an outer disk 5 and secured centrally of the hopper axis, as at 6, by being twisted about a hub portion at the outer side of the disk 5. These details may be greatly varied, but they illus tratc one means of supplying filling carriers for replenishment of filling and also of securing the filling ends.
The magazine or hopper in the present instance of the invention is shown as of the rotary type and so, as these successive filling carriers are transferred, the filling end a leading from the carrier next to be transferred will obviously be at the lower portion of the disk 5 in case such 'disk be employed. On replenishment of filling, when the filling carrier is transferred from the hopper to i the shuttle, the end leading therefrom and secured at the point 6, will cause the filling end a to take position as indicated in Fig. 1, as the shuttle is picked; that is, the filling a of the incoming filling carrier will take an inclined position above the shuttle box, and unless the length of filling between the cloth selvage and the fixed point be removed, it is liable to drop into the path of the shuttle or the danger zone and be carried into the shed, a condition that is particularly liable to occur when the temple thread cutter parts the filling end at the cloth selvage. or even should the filling end'be broken.
Mounted upon the breast beam of the loom is the temple stand 7 which may have the usual temple thread cutter, so that both the incoming filling end and the outgoing filling end may be severed at the cloth selvage.
Pivotally mounted at 8 is the filling end controller 9, the downwardly extending end portion 10 of which is adapted to engage the filling end a of the incoming fillin when replenishment has been effected. T e piv eta]. support. 8 of the controller 9 is prefen ably, though not necessarily, formed by an arm 11 which may be secured by a nut 12 to the stud shaft 13 01? the rotary hopper.
Secured at the trout of the loom and preterably on the breast beam is a thread catcher it which may be constituted as a wire finger bent upwardly at 15 and then reversely bent, as at 16, to form a catcher tor the filling; ends delivered to it by the filling end controller 9. In the present instance, the catcher 14 is secured by a bolt 17 to a fixed part of the loom and extends rearwardly a suliicient distance to permit the swinging controller 9 to carry the end filling into engagement with the catcher when filling replenishment has been effected.
In order that the fillingend controller 9 may be given sweeping action transversely of the lay to engage the incoming filling end when filling; replenishment etleoted, the present invention contemplates that. the till ing end controller shall be so connected to the lay that its filling end will sweep transversely over the path oi movement ofthe incominp filling end on the first pick of the shuttle :tollowing replenishment, and to insure that the engaged filling end shall be swept trontwardly into control oi. the filling end g atherer. the means for actuating the filling end controller is contrived to impart to the lower end thereof a sweep inc" movement trontwardly to carrythe end oil the engaged filling); into the thread gatherer.
In the present ins ance of the invention, the shuttle box 18 which is carried by the lay 19, as usual, has projecting" upwardly therefrom the rigid arm 20 having a lateral extension 21 provided with. an opening; 22 through which opening 22 extends the lilling end controller 9. The rigid. arm 20 may be secured to the top of the shuttle box or to the lay in any suitable position by means of a screw or other securing means 23. It will be noted that the filling); end controller E), which is pivotally mounted at the lived point 8, is engaged with the actuating; arm or member 90 at a point between. the pivot oi the controller and its lower filling engaging end, the result being that the lower end portion of the controller will be given a movement: in the same direction as the lay but at a greater speed, to the end that on frontward movement the filling; end engaged bythe filling end controller will be swept frontwardly and intov the control of the thread catcher.
From the construction thus far described it will be apparent that the incoming filling; end will be enga ed by the filling end controller through its sweeping action and at a greater speed than the lay movement will he carried frontwardly and held in its front position by the thread gatherer, so that at a subsequent period the temple thread out-- iho outgoing filling end is withdrawn from the lay in a corresponding manner to that of the incoming; filling end; that is to say, the outgoing' filling end is engaged by a ya controller which is pivotally mounted at a lined point and is given a swinging; i'i'iovoment in a. direction transversely of the lay to withdraw the filling; end from the lay and shuttle box.

2. In a filling" replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle box, a filling; end contr ller pivotally mounted at fired point above the lay and provided with a downwardly. extending portion to engage the filling above the shuttle box, and means secured to the lay and positively connected to the filling); end controller to cause the latter to sweep over the shuttle how on every lay movement to withdraw a filling end.
3. In filling; replenishing; loom, the combination of replenishing mechanism, a filling end controller pivotally supported at atined point above the lay and having a downwardly entending filling; engaging per tion, and positively sliding connections be tween the lay and filling end controller to impart to the latter a frontward sweeping movement relative to the lay during every beat-up of the lay to remove a filling end frontward of the lay.
4. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism, a filling end controller pivotally mounted above the lay, a filling engaging arm, a rigid member secured to the lay and positively connected to the filling engaging arm above its filling engaging end to impart a sweep ng movement thereto on every beat up movement of the lay to advance the engaged filling t'rontward relative to the lay.
5. In a filling replenishing loom, the com bination of replenishing mechanism, a filling end controller pivotally supported at a fixed point above the lay and having a downwardly extending filling engaging portion, continuous connections between the lay and th filling end controller to impart to the latter a frontward sweeping movement relative to the lay during every beat-up movement of the lay to remove a filling end frcntward of the lay, and means for retaining the filling end in front position as the filling end controller moves back.
6. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling end controller pivotally mounted for sweeping movements transversely across the lay and having a part for engaging the incoming filling, and means secured to the lay and also continuously connected to the filling end controller to impart such movements on every beat up of the lay that the engaged filling may be swept frontward of the lay at any time replenishment occurs.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, the com bination of a filling end controller pivotally mounted for sweeping movements trans versely across the lay and having a part for engaging the incoming filling, and means operated by the lay and positively connected to the controller for imparting said sweeping movements on every beat up of the lay.
8. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling end controller pivotally mounted for sweeping movements transversely across the lay and having a part for engaging the incoming filling, and means carried by the lay and having a positive and sliding connection with the controller for imparting sweeping movements thereto on every beat up movement of the lay that an engaged filling end may be swept frontward of the lay.
9. In a filling replenishing loom, the com hination ot' a filling end controller pivotally mounted for sweeping movements transversely across the lay and having a part for engaging the incoming filling, means connected to the lay and having a continuous sliding connection with the filling end controller to impart such movements thereto on every beat up of the lay that the engaged filling may be swept frontward of the lay, and separate means for retaining the filling in front position.
10. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling end controller pivotally mounted above the field of lay movements, an arm mounted on the lay and having an opening through which the controller extends for imparting movements of the lay on every beat up movement of the lay there to at increased speed that the controller may move with and at higher rate of speed than the lay.
11. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay and shuttle box, a filling end controller comprising an arm pivotally mounted at a fixed point relative to the lay, and a controller actuator formed as an arm mounted on the lay and having a horizontal portion provided with an open ing through which the filling end controller extends for positive actuation on every beat up movement of the lay.
