UNITED STATES AUGUST WI'ITHAEGER, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
ELASTIC ARM Benn AND sanrnn.
Application filed March 9, 1927. Serial No. 174,036.
My invention relates to improvements in elastic armbands and garters, of the form that has an armband structure proper that is made of elastic webbing in the usual manner of av strip of webbing with the ends brought together and secured for making an endless structure, and that has a bow of ribbon mounted on the junction of said ends for ornamentation, and the object of my improvement is to provide at such junction for the purpose of further ornamentation and display and trimming, a button that has an exposed face finished in some fanciful manner as may be desired, such as a plain finish, or with an initial or a monogram, or having a coating of celluloid, for enhancing the attractiveness or novelty thereof, and which button is supported at said junction in a novel manner.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an elastic armband that has a fanciful button mounted at the junction of the webbing ends and the wings of the bow in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a representation of the blank for the button.
Figure 4: is a showing of the blank for the clasp to which the button is secured.
Figure 5 is a view that is part in side elevation and part in section of the button in formed-up condition and with the securing ears in rip-standing position so as to be adapted to be mounted on the clasp.
higure 6 is a side elevation of the button assembled on the clasp and with the arms of the clasp extended so as to be receivable on the garter structure.
Figure 7 is a sectional View on the line 7(" of Fig. 2.
Figure 8 is a sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 2.
Figure 9 shows a modification.
li iy improved elastic armband and garter comprises the armband structure or body 10 of the usual form that is made of elastic webbing in strip form and with the ends brought together and secured so as to make an endless structure. Said ends are covered in some way for concealment and mounted on the junction of said ends there may be an actual bow of ribbon or there may be a semblance of a bow involving a display of a pair of laterally directed wings 11 of ribbon. Thus at the junction webbing ends or adjacent thereto are located the inner opposed ends of the wings 11.
Located at the junction mentioned in the structure that is shown is a button 12 that has afanciful exposed face and on which face is disclosed a character 18 that is in the form of the capital letterW.
T he material that is displayed on said exposed face 14: may be varied in various ways. Thus there may be a plain and nicely finished surface, or an initial such as shown may be used, or a monogram or numenl, and either a metal face may be used or there may be a coating of celluloid, or the surface may be painted.
The manner of constructing the button 12 and the means employed for securing the same inv place are as follows Said button 12 is made of sheet metal and comprises a body 15 that in most cases would be substantially circular in shape, as shown. Integral with said body 15 and located at opposite sides are a pair of cars 16 that are adapted to be bent around for securing the button to the clasp 17.
Said clasp 17 is made of sheet metal, in strip form, and previous to assembling is bent into U-shape so as to provide the arms 18 that are connected by the yoke 19. The button 12 is mounted upon the yoke 19.
The junction structure 20 comprises the material of the webbing 21 of the band 10 and the opposed and adjacent inner ends of the wings 11 of the how 22 and on said unction structure 20 is mounted the unit that is composed of the clasp 17 and the button 12 that is mounted thereon. Said unit 23 is secured in place by applying the yoke 19 to the front portion or outer portion and bending the arms 18 around and against the inner face so as to effect a clamping pressure.
Thus, as described, the unit 28 serves as a trimming or the like for the band 10 and the exposed face of the button is mounted for display.
In the modification that is shown in Fig. 9 the button 12 may be substantially as already described as well as the wings 11 and other parts of the garter proper or armband. As to the details of the clasp 17 this may be wider than the clasp 17 and may be appreciably wider than the spread or lateral separation of the securing ears 16 that are integral with the body 15 of said (iii button 12. Therefore, instead of bending the said ears 16 directly overand around the cooperating edgeportion of said yoke 19 of said clasp 17, said edge portion is provided with notches or recesses 2st that tit said ears 1e and in which the registering portions of said ears are housed.
The cooperation of the notches and ears as described serves to increase the holding effect for overcoming any tendency of relative rotation of the button and the clasp.
As described, the yoke 19 of the clasp 17 is covered by the button 12 and serves as the means o'l support for said lnitton and the securing: means comprise the securii'ig cars 16 that are integral with the button body 15 and that are bentaround and over the opposite edge portions of said yoke 19.
meme? I claim as my invention In an elastic armband or garter structure, a band proper of elastic Webbing of endless form, bow wings of ribbon mounted on said band and having inner ends opposed and adjacent, a button of sheet metal having a body that has the face finished for display and that is provided with. integral securing cars, a clasp of sheet metal comprising a pair of clasp arms and an intermediate yoke, said button being secured to said yoke by means of bending said securing ears individually over and around opposedand adjacent edge portions of said yoke, said button and yoke being applied to said band so as to cover said bow wing ends and being held in place by said clasp arms.
