WATCH ADAPTER Filed Jan. 2, 1935 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Dec. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE WATCH ADAPTER Edmund A. Coleman, New York, N. Y.
Application January 2, 1935, Serial No. 78
2 Claims. (01. 632) This invention relates to the manufacture of will be readily perceived upon reference to the watches and more particularly to the provision following specification and drawing, in which Fig. of devices for the adaptation of wrist watches of 1 is a perspective view of a standard type of Wrist standard type for use as pocket or pendant watch adapted for use with the invention; Figs.
watches in an extremely simple manner and with 2a and 2b illustrate in perspective the complethe production of a duplex article of pleasing and mentary accessory members which will adapt such ornamental appearance. watch for diiferent purposes; Fig. 3 is a rear view A watch adapted for use as a wrist watch and of the watch of Fig. 1 with the accessory members as a pendant watch has heretofore been sugattached thereto; Fig. 4 is a front view of the gested but the production of such a watch rewatch similarly assembled; Fig. 5 is a front View 10 quires a special casing with which special of a different type of standard Wrist watch with coupling devices must be used. Such a structure modified novel complementary and ornamental is interesting as a novelty but lacks commercial members of the present invention attached; Fig. practicability for the reason that the special in- 6 is a rear view of the device of Fig. 5; and Fig. "I
teracting members required in order to accomis a detail in perspective with adjacent parts in 15 plish the desired interchangeability increase the section, of one of the gudgeons with which I secost of the article out of all proportion to the decure a strong and sturdy connection between the mand for it. Moreover, it is diflicult to design a auxiliary members and the wrist Watch frame. watch casing and special complementary coupling In Fig. l the watch case I0 is provided with outmembers in such a, fashion that the alternative wardly extending lugs or tabs l2, I3, 22 and 23, 20 use of the assembly will not be apparent to the each provided with an opening II in which the observer, and a watch so designed, either when ends of pintles l4 and 24 are adapted to be inused as a wrist watch or as a pendant watch, serted. This is a wrist watch of the standard leaves telltale indications that it is in fact only type now in use, the pintles l4 being constructed 25 temporarily fitted for that p p n Other so that they yield or telescope against a spring in 25 words, the fittings or connections necessary for order to facilitate their insertion and removal in one use are at least in part observable when the the openings H which serve as their bearings. watch is being put to the alternative use, there- Around each pintle the ordinary wrist watch strap y detracting om the appearance a ppeal of is passed and when the strap is in place the ast e co at o sembly presents a neat and attractive appearance 30 I have discovered that it is possible to provide which shows very little of the structure connecta coupling member and a complementary ornaing the strap with the watch. mental member for use with the standard wrist To replace the strap passing around the pintle, watch without the provision of a special casing, so I provide complementary members l5 and 25 that the wrist watch is changed in appearance shown in Figs. 2a and 2b, 3 and 4. Member I5 is 35 only when the accessory members are attached d preferably of a fiat piece of metal having l'g t to chagge t into i h attractlive watchbfor its sides turned up as at I! in order to give the poo e or pen an use. e coup ing mem member an appropriate depth, although he are ornamental in nature and are shaped to fill member may be constructed of heavy metal 40 in the irregular outline of the watch case and to tire1y At the top is provided an eyelet 15 and 40 impart thereto a substantially regular contour a ring to which a chain or ribbon is adapted to havmg an attractlve and fimshed appearance be connected. The accessory s? g and remova 0 e h invention are sim 1e in construcrespon mg pm 35: 2:1 El a; lie very easily attac hed t and Integrally secured adJacent the lower edge of tached from the wrist watch in order to enable member and the upper edge of member 25 F gudgeons l 9 shaped as indicated in perspective in it to serve these dual functions. The objects and advantages of the invention Fig. 7 and having an outwardly extending lip 2| 55 adapted to extend over and contact against the side of the watch casing. Through the opening in each of these members are inserted the pintles I4 and 24 and these pintles are compressed against their internal springs sufliciently to shorten them longitudinally and allow their ends to be brought in line with the openings in the lugs l2, I3, 22 and 23, at which time they are released and the ends of the pintles allowed to seat themselves in the openings in the lugs. This pintle and lug construction is, as I have previously indicated, well known in the art. The gudgeons or holding members fix the auxiliary members 15, 25, etc., in position and lips 2| prevent them from turning about their pivots.
When the structure has been assembled, the result is similar to that shown in Fig. 4 with coupling member l5 and pendant member 25 securely attached to the watch and completely transforming it into a neat and attractive pocket or pendant watch, the alternative function of which is observable only to the eye of an expert.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown front and rear views of another type of watch 3| in which the sides of the watch case are extended to form the lugs 32, 33, 42 and 43 in which appropriate openings are provided for the insertion of pintles 34 and 54. These pintles are similar to those previously described and are removed from and inserted into the gudgeons l9 which are rigidly attached to the auxiliary members, and then snapped in place in the appropriate openings provided in the extending ends of the case. The result shown in Fig. 5 shows modified complementary members 35 and 45, the former being provided with an eyelet 35. Fig. 6 shows the rear of such an assembly, the complementary members being shown as constructed with flanged sides 31 similar to i? in Figs. 1-3. Such construction is illustrative merely of the manner in which an attractive assembly is formed which gives little indication of the identity of the original watch.
It is apparent that when the watch is used as a wrist watch the standard wrist watch assembly is used, and there is no change in its structural features to mar its appearance. By a simple manipulation the strap or band of the wrist watch may be removed and the auxiliary members of the present invention substituted by attaching them to the standard strap fittings of the watch; which is thus changed into a pocket or pendant watch of artistic appeal, giving little indication of its real identity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a wrist watch having longitudinally yielding pintles journaled in bearings provided at the sides of the watch case, a coupling member having a gudgeon integrally secured therewith, said gudgeon being disposed about one of said pintles and having a lip extending outwardly and parallel to the adjacent side of the case'and thereby firmly positioning the coupling member with respect to the case, and a pendant member similarly attached to the opposite side of the case, said coupling member and pendant thus transforming said watch from a wrist type into a pocket type.
2. In combination with a wrist watch having longitudinally yielding pintles journaled in bearallel to and substantially contacting the adjacent side of the case, said auxiliary members being thereby substantially fixedly positioned on said case and transforming the watch into a pocket type watch.
EDMUND A. COLEMAN.
