UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. JARVIS, 0E SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN.-
noon, CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed March 14, 1927.. Serial No; 175,044. 7
This invention relates to doors and particularly to a novel form of j amb construction therefor, the principal object being to pro vide a simple and efiicient door of this type a particularly adapted for use in fire walls of buildings of the like where smoke, fumes, or dust, are to be contended with.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will appear in the further description cated at 3 so that graduated pressure maybe applied to the doorwhen being finally closed. 1 represents a section of the wall in which the door is installed, it, in this'instance, being shown as of metal.
The inside edges of the door opening are surrounded with the reinforcing angle 5 which is riveted to the wall 4 as by the rivets (3, they also holding in place the generally Z- shaped jamb plate 7 so positioned as to lit snugly about the corner formed by the installation of the angle 5, but preferably does.
not extend inwardly the full depth of said angle. The inner edge of theplate 7 is folded back upon itself and pinchingly holds a resilient cushioning member 8, preferably of fireproof felt material or the like, intermediate of said folded portions, and the body of the Z-plate thus providing a yieldablejamb member wholly about the edges of the door opening a Upon the edge of the door is formed an inwardly projecting stop by the angle plate 9 being fastened in any desired manner to the outer edge of the door and extending inwardly to a parallel position with the body portion of the plate 7 when the door is closed, and curved backwardly upon itself as at 10 for overlapping the extreme inner edge of 1:
a similarly shaped angle plate 11, the free end of which extends parallel with and adjacent the inwardly extending portion of the plate 9, so that a door flange having a con-v vex edge is presented to the resilient stop 8 and is substantially reinforced by the plate 11; the same being somewhat yieldable for convenience in compensating for irregularities in the relation between the door and the opening therefor. The plate 9 may cover the entire outer surface of the door if preferred or be formed of a narrow strip aboutthe door as shown in Figure 2,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: The combination with a door jamlo co1nprising a Z-shapedangle plate attachedto the edge of the door opening withits extreme edge turned backwardly upon itself and a resilient cushion pinchingly held within said .backwardly turned portion, of a door having an inwardly projecting flange about the edge thereof comprising an angle plate fastened to the outer face of the door and extending inwardly thereof withits extreme edge bent backwardly towards the door forming a groove, a second angle plate fastened to the inner face of the door and extending inwardly parallel with the first mentioned plate with its outermost edge within the groove formed by the first mentioned plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
GEORGE E. JARVIS.
