1 Claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a completely concealed sash balance for a double hung window and to provide simultaneously a Weatherstrip, a parting strip and an all metal jamb lining on which the sash may slide. I attain these objects by means illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is an isometric drawing showing a short length of the resilient metal jamb lining web with the combined sash balance housing and parting strip, with a sash balance, such as a coil spring, inserted within the combined sash balance housing and parting strip.
Figure 2 is a section through a jamb of a double hung window frame with two sections of my invention applied to the jamb in a manner needed to install both the upper and lower sash of a window.
Figure 3 is an isometric view of the bracket which connects the sash balance and sash.
Figure 4 is a partially cut away isometric drawing without the jamb, showing the jamb lining web with the combined sash balance housing and parting strip with the sash balance connected to the sash.
Similar numerals refer to throughout the several views.
The channel-shaped section consisting of a jamb lining web with the combined sash balance housing and parting strip, is illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 4 and is of a resilient sheet metal. The jamb lining web and back I of the combined sash balance housing and parting strip is fastened to the jamb l2 of the window frame. The combined sash balance housing and parting strip 2 conceals the sash balance 3 which may be a coil spring. The terminal portion 4 of the combined sash balance housing and parting strip 2 and the flange 5 act as weatherstrips. The space similar parts between the terminal portion 4 of the combined sash balance housing and partin strip 2 and the jamb lining web I forms a runway 6 in which the bracket 1 slides. At the bottom of the sash 8 is fastened the bracket 1 to which is secured the balance 3 by a hook 9 at the end of the balance. The top of the balance is fixed near the top of the jamb by a metal frictional fastener such as a nail or screw, over which the end of the balance is hooked. A rabbet ill at the corner of the sash 8 allows for the insertion of the combined sash balance housing and parting strip 2. The lips ll act as a stop between the two sash and cover the joint between the face of the sash and the combined sash balance housing and parting strip 2.
I claim:
A combined weather strip, parting strip and sash balance housing for a double hung window comprisin a resilient, sheet metal, channelshaped section mounted in a window opening so that its web extends vertically along the jambyof said pening and having one of its flanges extending towards the opposite jamb member and resiliently bearing against the face of one of the vertically sliding sash mounted in said opening the other flange of said section being shaped to form a housing for the sash balance by having an outside portion extending from the web towards the opposite jamb, an intermediate portion bent to extend towards the first mentioned flange and a terminal portion bent to extend toward and stop short of said web to form a vertical runway to accommodate a bracket connecting the I,
sash balance to the sash, said terminal portion resiliently bearing against the opposite face of said sash to form a weather seal and separate said sash from the other sash.
OLIVER STEFAN.
