It will also be seen that this spring will allow the cap to yieldy under expansion or contraction so that there will be no danger of breaking the glass. This also allows the use ot' a relatively heavy metal for the supporting bar and the cap because it is not necessary thatthey should yield to allow for this expansion and contraction, and thus the supporting structure may be made heavier' and more rigid giving it greater strength and also longer life. It will be noted that the head oi the bolt 34 is seated in the bottom of an inverted cup 39 in the gutter member Thus the opening for the bolt raised above the bottom oit the gutter so that moisture cannotleak through this opening. 'lhe outer lower end of the cap 33 is closed as shown at 40, to give a finish and prevent entrance oi moisture.
The upper edges of the glass are enclosed and also clamped in position by a ridge ap Lll. This is of sheet metal bent to substantially the form shown and has openings 4t2 in its side Walls to receive the upper end ot the cap 33. The upper bolt i3 is similar to the bolts 34 but it also passes through the ridge plate 29, the ilanges 30 ot the ridge member, the gutter member 25, the top of the body portion of the supporting bar 2l and the ridge cap .tl so as to secure all olf these members together. It is not, however, necessary that it should pass through the cap 33 so that the upper end of this cap merely abuts against the side of the bolt, as shown in Fig. l.. This bolt is provided with a spring 37 the same as the other bolts.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the construction is extremely simple and rigid as it may be made oi' relatively heavy sheet metal which is bent to form giving a maximum of strength. As the glass is supported on all four sides and is clamped by means mounted to yield under expansion and contraction there is no danger of the glass being broken by strains due to this expansion and contraction. The glass at its upper edge and upright ends is also so mounted that it may move in its supports as it expands and contracts. In installing the glass no putty or other packing' is necessary as any moisture which passes under the edges of the cap or clamping bar 33 is carried out by the gutters Q3, and moisture trom sweating on the under side oli the glass will be carried down into the gutters 25 by which it will be carried to the outer side oli the curb and discharged through the openings in the bottom ot the `gutter 13.
Having thus set 'forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
l. A glass holding structure comprising a sheet metal supporting bar bent upon itself to :torni en imei-ted U-shuped body portion and walls extending upwardly 'roni the lower edges ot the sides thereot and spaced from said body portion on opgosite sides thereof to form ,i itters to carry moisture and terminating in iree enges forming seats for the a longitinlinally extending member mounted below said bar having r w .rdly extending outer edges on opposite sides ot said bar spaced :troni the glass to i'orni a sweat gutter beneath the glass, a tap resting on the top ot the glass on oppote sides of said bur, and bolts tor clan'iping the cap to the glass.
