This invention relates toa swivel bailer or the like adapted for hailing out oil wells and the like, and concerns itself primarily with the head' construction thereof which may also be used in connection with a sand pump or cleaning out pump, or for anyY other suitable purpose. n
The invention comprises the novel structure and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointed outr and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the diff ferentviews:
Figure lis an elevational view of the bailer. i
Figure' 2 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional vieu7 of the bailer.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but taken in a plane at right angles to the plane in which the section of Figure 2 was taken.
Figure l is an enlarged sectional view upon the line 4 4: of Figure 3.
Figure 5 vis a fragmentary sectional view through a modified form of bailer neck.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the body of the bailer, to which a novel form of head 2 is connected. This head consists of a cylindrical portion `or neck 2 provided with a bore 3 to receive the wire sand line 4. The inner portion of the bore 3 is counterbored for the reception of a swivel head 5 which has an axial open-V ing for the reception of the rope; said opening flaring toward its inner end to allow for spreading and securement of thel sand line therein.
The head 2 terminates at its other end in a pair of diametrically opposite and spaced attaching extensions 6 which are spread out beyond the diameter of the neck 2a and form recesses at opposite sides of the head and the extensions have -exterior arcuate surfacesV corresponding to the interior contour of the bailer. The outer surfaces 'i of these exten sions are rabbeted to receive the bailer 1 which is secured to said extensions preferably by bolts or the like. These extensions are so formed and the upper end of the body portion of the bailer is so cut out as to form recesses in said portion which register with the recesses in the head portion to provide suitable air apertures 7 between the said extensions,` said. `apertures enough to insert the swivel hea-d or its equivalent in place in the counter-bore of the neck.
In the use of thisbailer, it is suspended from the sand line, and the swivel rotates and takes up the lay in thersand line, consequentlyV the yba-iler will descend in a true vertical position. y f
In cases where a swivel connection is not necessary, the swivel may be removed and the sand line or cable secured in the swivel seat, or the bore in the head may `flare inwardly as shown in Figure 5 to allow the end ofthe cable to be wedged therein.
This nov-el form of bailer top or hood whichis greatly reduced with respect to the bailer body has the advantage in that it can be more easily jarred loose if stuck and can be more readily lished out by a combination socket and long stroke jar. The upper end of the head is preferably provided with serrations 2b for this purpose.
It will be observed that the swivel head 5 liesr entirely within its seat or counter-bore of the neck. only its inner edges being exposed and these edges being positioned beyond the apertures 7, so that no part of its circumference is exposed to gather grit and Y* lead it into the counter-bore or bearing for being large the head` which would soon grind the swivel head and its bearing away.
I am aware thatk numerous details of con-k struction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore donot purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitatedy by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: l
1. rA swivel bailer comprising a head having spaced extensions and a neck extending therefrom of reduced diameter, said neck having anaxial bore enlarged at its inner end, a swivel head rotatably mounted inthe enlargement of the bore and a cylindrical body portion secured to the outside of said extensions and having that portion of its wall between said extensions notched to form recesses, the portion of the head at thejuncif tion of the neck and sai-d extensions also forming recesses to register with body por-V therefrom of reduced diameter, said neck having an axial bore enlarged at its inner end, a swivel head rotatably mounted in the enlargement of the bore and a cylindrical body portion secured to theioutside of said extensions and having that portion of its wall between said extensions notched to Jform recesses, the portion of the head at the junction oi" the neck and said extensions also Y formin recesses to reoister with bod ortion recesses to provide air openings on opposite sides of head to insert the swivel head of the device, said swivel head being located in the base of the neck with its inner edge lying outside of the bore and short of the air openings.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
FRANK J. HINDERLlTER.
