Description

May 25 1926- 1,586,364 R. L. HENDRICKSQN STUFFING BOX F'iled Sept. 2'7 1924 RALPH L. nmvnnrcxson, or MIDWEST, w'vonins. I
s'rnrmne BOX.
Application filed September 27, 1924. Serial No. 740,313.
' This invention '-relates to an improved stutfing box, which is especially, but not necessarily, designed for use :in connection with oil well pumps.
In carrying out the invention, it is my principal object to produce a stuffing box of novel construction, which is an improvement upon prior patented and marketed devices with which I am familiar, the improved device being such as to permit the usual polished rod tobe dispensed with, and to permit repairs and replacements to be made,
with ease and facility.
Qne feature of the improved boXis the structure provided for permitting the box to be adjusted in the pipe and along the sucker rod, yet maintaining a fluid tight jointwith the rod.
More specifically speaking, I propose toprovide a stuffing box, which embodiesthe telescopically connect-ed sections, with com-v pressible packing placed therebetween and adapted to be compressed into tight contact with the suckerrod. I
Another feature of the invention is the external readily replaceable packing cups, which bear tightly against the inner surface of the casing, in which the device is located.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same The figure represents a. central vertical section through a device constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the same slidably mounted in a pipe section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 1 designates a barrel, casing or the like, formed from a single length of pipe, the same being screw threaded, as at 2, to permit it to be connected to the upper end of the well tubing, ata
point above the surface of the ground. For
the sake of illustration, I have Shown the usual sucker rodS extending through the pipe. It is understood that the stuffing box is intended to prevent wastageof the fluid at the head of the tubing and to force the fluid into the usual lead pipe existing at this point. Although the box could be constructed otherwise, it preferably comprises an internally screw threaded cup 4, having the centrally disposed opening in its bottom to permit the passage-of thesuclier rodf Threaded into the cup is the tubular mom her 5, which extends above and surrounds the sucker rod. interposed between the cup and the tubular member are split washers 6, between which suitable packing material 7 is located. Thistype of packing aifordsa fluid tight joint, with the sucker rod. Fitting into the upperend of the tube 5 is the tapered clamping collar 8, which frictionally grips the sucker rod. The collar is provided at its top with a. flange resting on the top of the tube and a cap is threaded onto the upper end of. the tube to maintain the collarin place. Just below the cap, the tube isprovided on its outer face with a wrench gripping surface 10. Intermediate its ends the tube is screw threaded anda clamping ring. 11 is threaded thereon. This clamping ring serves to maintain a plurality of leather packing cups 12 inplace, these cups'being of conventional form and the'usual followers 18 being associated therewith. On lifting the stufiing box to the top of the pipe, the packing cup could be readily removed specific embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that minor changes falling 7 within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to, if desired.
I claim 1. A'stufling box of the class described comprising an open ended tubular member provided with screw threads at its opposite ends, an internally screw threaded cup threaded upon the lower end of said member, compressible packing material located between the bottom of the cup and the adjacent end of said member, a tapered clamping collar fitted into the upper end of said tubular member, a retaining cap carried by said last named end and cooperable with said collar to maintain the latter in'place, packing-cups surrounding the intermediate portion of the tubular member just above said first named cup, and a clamping ring threaded upon the intermediate portion of the member for pressing said packing-cups between the ring and first named cup.
2. A stuffing box of the class described comprising an open ended tube screw threaded externally at its opposite ends, and at a point between its ends, said member being torn'iulated with a fiat faced portion to adapt it to be gripped by a wrench, a centrally apertured packing receiving cup internally screw threaded at its open end, the lower end of said tube being tapped into the cup, compressible packing located between the tube and bottom of the cup and adapted to be compressed therebetween upon relative turning movement, a tapered clamp fitting into the upper end of said tubular member and adapted to frictionally grip a sucker rod, 21- retaini'ng cap carried by said last named end and cooperable with said collar, followers disposed between the cup and intermediate screw threaded portion of said tube, packing-cups in association with said followers, and a clamping ring upon the last named threaded portion of said tubular member for clamping the followers and packing cups tightly between the cup and itself.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
RALPH L. HENDRICKSON.
