Application filed November 12, 1923. Serial No.
To, all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMEs M. MC- lDoNoUGH and TONY J. STEVENS, citizens of the United States, residing at Galveston, Galveston County, Texas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Pump Packings, of which the fol- Another object is to provide means for automatically retaining the gland in depressed position. I
Referring to the drawing herewith, forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a' central longitudinal section through a pump barrel and plunger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the packing locking device; and Fig. 3' is-"a-broken detail illustrating a portion of said locking means.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in all the views.
In the drawing the pump barrel 1 is shown as being connected at its upper end to the tubing 2. At itsv lower end it is reduced slightly in diameter and threaded at 3 to make a flush joint with a nipple 4,'the wall of which is thicker than that of the pump barrel to provide a shoulder at 5 to receive the radial flange 6 upon the upper end of the packing sleeve 7 fitting within the said nipple. The lower end of thenipple is threaded internally to receive the tubing 8 adapted to connect the nipple and pump barrel with the foot valve-not shown.
The upper end of the packing sleeve 7 forms aseat to receive the packing means which consists, in this embodiment, of a com-- pressible wear resisting ring 9. Said packing is held downwardly in its seat by a gland made up of a sleeve 10, resting thereon and fitting closely against the plunger. 7
The said sleeve is reduced in external diameter at 11 and tapered upwardly to pro vide a seat 12 for a set of four arcuate slips or dogs 13. I
Said slips have connection at their upper ends with a flat ring or washer 14. bet screws 15 passing through said ring are secured in said jaws as shown in'Fig. 2. The openings 16 in said ring are oblong radially of the ring to allow expansion or contraction of said slips in use, the ring serving to retain them in assembled position. The jaws are provided with upwardly inclined teeth 17 and, to receive these teeth, the inner surface of the upper end of the barrel 1 may be, also toothed at 18, said teeth being downwardly inclined.
The plunger comprises a smooth .cylindrical barrel 19 which is understood as having the usual valve at the lower end thereof. The barrel 19 is threaded internally at 20 for attachment to a head 21 having a passage 22 for the fluid. The upper end is threaded for attachment tothe sucker rod 23.
The lower end of the head has a shoulder 24 projecting beyond the plunger barrel to cont-act with the upper end of the gland 10 whose inner surface makes a. close fit with the plunger barrel 19. lBoth the lower end of the gland 10 and the upper end of the sleeve? have annular grooves 25 to receive and compress the packing.
Tn operation the gland 10 will be pressed downwardly .upon the packing until it is sufficiently compressed to fit the plunger closely. The slips 13 will thus be allowed to drop by gravity until the teeth thereon engage the. teeth 18 on the pump "barrel, thus holding the gland in position. If the packing becomes so worn as tonecessitate further compression, this may be accomplished by lowering the plunger until the shoulder 24 contacts with the gland 10. A few blows of this head upon the gland will drive it downwardly, compressing the packing which will be automatically locked in compressed position by the j aws or slips 13 as previously explained. The plunger may be then raised and the pumping may proceed as before.
' ing a nipple, a packing sleeve in said lower section having an upperradial flange adapt- 1 ed to be clamped between said sections, comsmaller internal diameter than said long section, a sleeve within said short section, hav
maaeae ing a radial flange engaged between said sections, packing rings in said barrel above said sleeve for the purpose descr1bed,.a pump plunger and means actuated by said plunger to compress said packing rings against said sleeve. In testimony whereof we hereunto afix' our signatures this 7th day of November, A. D. 1923.
