JAMES E. SHIERY, OF GENEVA, INDIANA, AND JOHN SHIERY, OF BRIDG-EPORT,
'ILLIIIIO'IEL PACKING-HEAD FOR DEEP WELLS.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1913.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, the undersigned, JAMES E. SHIERY and J OI-IN SHIERY, citizens of the United States, residing at Geneva, Adams county, Indiana, and Bridgeport, in the county of Lawrence and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inPacking- Heads for Deep Wells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in equipment for deep wells, such as oil and gas wells.
The object of the invention is to provide a packing device or appliance capable of being used at the top section of the well tubing, and of being supported at operative position by the well casing. These general objects and other purposes of the invention which will be apparent as the nature of our invention is better understood, are accomplished by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein the several parts of the device are identified by suitable characters of reference Figure 1, is atop plan yiew, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central longitudinal'sectional view of our invention.
The cylinder A. has the integrally formed annular flange A and is provided with the machined bore A The lower end of the cylinder is threaded to receive the coupling 1 of the usual well tubing 2. From a location near the bottom of the cylinder there extends a port or passageway B whose upper end terminates at a location above the flange A and opens into a discharge pipe C that is screwed in a boss A A support ring D has aseat 1) upon which the flange A of the cylinder loosely fits. To connect together the cylinder and the support ring, the latter is so placed that its ears I) will pass the recesses A in the flange, when, at shifted position, one on the other, these members are held in loose enagement with each other. The ring D is internally threaded to be screwed down on the usual well casing 3.
The member E, is designated as the piston sleeve. 'This sleeve has a bore of suitable diameter to permit the passing therethrough of the well piston rod or wire 4. Secured to the top of the sleeve E is a clamp F. This clamp is so made that by tightening the bolts F the clamp will grip tightly the piston rod so that the sleeve will travel therewith. At the lower end of the sleeve, cups E and E secured by suitable means as shown, constitute a closure of the bore A Our im roved acking appliance consists of the cy inder, t e support ring, and the sleeve, as shown. The support ring and cylinder are provided with the ears I) and recesses A respectively, to afi'ord such connection between the two that handling and transporting this appliance as an article of manufacture may be facilitated, and to also hold the cylinder against tendency to rise, even slightly, with the upward movement of the piston.
To install the invention the support ring is detached from the cylinder and screwed down on the well casing. The cylinder with its well tubing is then let down to place, the flange A coming to rest on the seat D The next step is to let down over the piston rod 4, the .sleeve E. The arrangement whereby the leather cups E and E which constitute the closure of the bore A are retained is as follows: The collar E holds the cup E against the ring E The function of the ring E whose bore fits the piston rod is to hold the cup E securely against the collar E When the piston is adjusted to proper height with reference to the cylinder, and the bolts F are tightened, the installation of the invention is complete.
A well packing appliance constructed in accordance with our invention is adapted to be easily applied to use at any well of the character herein referred to. It is economical of manufacture, easy to install, and is not liable to be broken or deranged; Another advantage is that packing of the well head is entirely practicable where the small sized or wire piston rods aroused.
Tn operating the well provided with-this invention escape of the liquid at the piston rod is prevented by the packing cups E and E and at the same time a steadying of the piston rod against lateral vibration is had.
' The liquid raised in the tubing passes freely through the ports B and the discharge pipes C.
What we-claim as our invention is:
1. An appliance for deep wells, comprising a cylinder capable otl being supported by the well casing and of having connection at its bottom with the well tubing, there being ports extending from the lower portion of the cylinder bore to the top of-the cylinder, a sleeve adapted to be connected to the well piston and to move reciprocatingly in the bore of the said cylinder, and packing between the said sleeve and the cylinder ore.- 2. An appliance for deep wells, comprising apsupport-ring to be secured to the well casing, a. cylinder detachably connected to and supported by the said support ring there being ports extending from the lower portion of the cylinder bore to the top of the cylinder, a sleeve adapted to be connected to the well piston, and packing be- 15 tween the said sleeve and the cylinder bore.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
