I N. P ErERs, PHOTmLITHOGRA UNITED STATES PATENT FFIG.
WILLIAM H. BENNETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ERASER-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,531 dated July 13, 1875 application filed J nne 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. BENNETT, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Eraser-Holders; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in eraser-holders for attaching a rubber eraser to a pencil or a pen holder; and its object is to construct the holder in a simple, neat, and inexpensive manner, and attach it to the pencil or pen holder, so that it will securely hold the eraser without being cumbersome, and may be readily attached and detached. It consists in an eraser-holder composed of a short split tube, having. a divided flange formed on its upper edge, which, extending inwardly, forms a pair of jaws that grasp the rubber eraser, the said tube being adapted to be inserted in a longer tube or ferrule, which fits upon the end of the pencil or pen holder; and in the combination and arrangement of the said tube and ferrule with the pencil or pen holder, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 represents my improved eraser-holder attached to a pencil in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the ferrule with the eraser-holder and pencil in position, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views hereinafter eX- plained.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the several figures.
A represents the tubular holder into which the eraser B is inserted, which is composed of a split tube having a divided flange, 1), formed on its upper edge, which forms a pair of jaws that grasp the eraser B. This holder, being slit lengthwise, is capable of being spread apart (as shown in Fig. 5) for receiving the eraser, and it may either be made in one piece, as shown in the drawing, or may be in two pieces by leaving off the connecting portionat its lower end, and the inner surfaces of the jaws may be serrated for the purpose of holding the eraser more firmly, (as shown in Fig. 4, which is a top view,) or may be left plain, ,as desired. This holder A I insert into one end of a tube or ferrule, G, the other end of which is fitted on the pencil or pen holder D. This ferrule 0 may either be a plain tube, or it may slit from one or both ends, so as to constitute a spring-ferrule. In Fig. 3 is represented a ferrule, O, slit from both of its ends; but it will be readily understood that the slit may extend its entire length. The holder A, after the eraser B has been placed therein, is inserted into one end of the ferrule G, and being pushed down, the jaws formed by the flanges on its upper end firmly gripe the eraser and hold it securely in position. The ferrule is then placed upon the pencil or pen holder.
What I claim as my invention is As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described eraser-holder, consisting of the V-split tube A, having inwardly-projecting edges or serrated jaws b, for holding the rubber.
WILLIAM H. BENNETT.
