T. HOLDSWORTH.
. PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER. No. .296.751. A Patented Apr. 15, 1884.
&WWW WM WITJVESSES INVENTOR 9? %m aaa-M ML@ .Attorney 'UNITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS HOLDSWORTH, OF WEST WINSTED, CONNECTICUT.
PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,751, dated April 15, 1884.
Application filed April 94, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS HOLDSWORTH, of West Winsted, in the county of Litchfield and State of Gonnecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil Sha'peners and Holders, of which the following is e specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like paris.
Fignre l is an end View, F'g. 2 a side and Fig. 3 e top View of my device; and Fig. 4 shows the clevice Secured to a slate-frane.
The sharpener consists of' two roughened surfaces, standing at an angle. The end of the pencil is held within the groove and drawn back and forth, being turned in the ,fingers at the same time until sharpened.
I deen it best to make the sharpener of steel, in one piece, the inner surfaces of which are'roughenecl or cut, and stand at an angle, as shown in Fig. l. Two pieces may, however, be used' and the same result attained. The groove may be either V-sheped or rounding. This sharpener may be fastened to a sla-te-franie, clesk, or other place where convenicnt, and be used independent of the pencil-tubes c and b.
The holding device by which the sharpener is fastenecl to the siete or desk is made, preferaihly, of sheet metal, bent, as shown, to form two or more sockets or tubes, c and b, within which slaite and lead pencils are held. A portion, z', of the metal is cnt, as shown, from the side of the tube, and, being bent inwa-rdlyfiorms a sprin g which bears upon the pencil andholds it in place. Below the pencil-tubes a socket, f, is forxned, of such shape as to receive and hold an ordinary pen. Thus alead-pencil, pen, and shte-pencil may be held conveniently in one device.
The sides or wings d e provide a convenient means of attaching the device to aslate-frame or other desired place. The slate-frame fits snugly between the wings, and a screw or tack holds them firmly in place. It will readily be seen that the wings d may be attached directly to the sharpener and the tubes be omitted.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. As a new article ofmanufacture, the combined pencil sharpener and holder, consisting of sharpener'a, tubes Z c, and a means to attach the' same to a framc or desk, substantizlly as shown.
2. As a combined pencil sharpener and holder, a V-shaped roughened part and one or more tubes Secured together and provided with wings d, to secure the device to a slate treme, substantially as shown.
3. The pencil-sharpener a, in conbination with wings (Z, adapted to secure the sharpener to a slate or desh, substantially as shown.
THOMAS HOLDSXVORTH.
