A UNITED STATES JOHN BARRETT, OF BOONTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH H. HILER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR TAPPING BARRELS OR CASKS 0F FERMENTED LIQUORSL Specificalian forming part of Letters Patent No.
165,467, dated July 13, 1875; application filed February 96, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BARRETT, of the city of Boonton, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Tapping Barrels or Oasks of Fermented Liquors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form. apart of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved means for tapping barrels or casks of fermented liquors in a simple and efficient manner, and without any waste of the liquor contained therein; and it consists in an adjustable frame adapted to be fitted under the projecting edges of the chines of the cask or barrel, and provided with an auxiliary frame having a lever operatingin connection with other parts for the adjustment of the faucet within the head of the cask or barrel, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my invention, showing the manner of its adaptation to the head of a cask. Fig. 2 is a section of a head of a cask, showing position of the punch when driving in the bung. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of Y-shaped frame, showing its adaptation to the head of a cask by means of an adjustable foot and thumbscrew.
A represents a Y-shaped frame, adapted to r be fitted upon the head of the barrel or cask,
the feet B of which are so beveled as to fit under the projecting edges or chine of the barrel, as shown; one of said feet beingmovable and adjusted by a suitable thumb-screw, which secures said frame firmly to the head of the forms a segment, and is supplied with cogs, a, (the shaft 1) being the center,) which mesh into corresponding cogs, 0, arranged on the back of the frame. The ends of the shaft 1) pass through rollers d, arranged on each side, and adapted to move up and down in the slotted sides of the frame, as shown in Fig. 3.
A post, 0, having a socket in its lower end, is pivoted on the shaft I), between the ends of the slotted lever 0; said post being adapted to receive a punch, F, which, when in position, rests upon the end of the faucet c, and secured thereto by the spring-clamps operated by the thumb-screw g. The lever 0 can be thrown out of gear with the cogs a, when either a long or short stroke may be desired, by moving it to one side, there being sufficient room in the frame D for that purpose.
In the operation of my invention, the frame A should be firmly attached to the head of the barrel or cask by means of the adjustable thumb-screw, so that the socketed post 0 will come directly over the plug in the same. The punch-handle D is then inserted in the socket of the post 0, while the punch itself, marked E in the drawing, and which is provided with a rim or collar, Z, rests upon the plug. The
)ost c is then struck a smart blow with a hammer or mallet, whieh operation forces the punch against the plug, thereby driving it in the barrel until the collar 1 of the punch strikes against the head of the barrel, the punch E being so graduated that it does not force the bung clearthrough, as shown in Fig. 2. The punch E is now removed from the post 0, and the punch F substituted in its place, the spring'clamps attached thereto slipping over the end of the faucet e, and tightened thereon by the thumb-screw g,-while the other end of the faucet is placed in the bun g-hole, and up against the partially drivenin bung, and the same then forced into the barrel-head, by means of the lever O, as far as requisite, at the same time forcing the bung into the barrel, as shown in Fig. 1, after which the same may be removed.
As an additional means of safety and to prevent leakage, the faucet e is encircled with a rubber band, h, which presses tightly against PATENT OFFICE.
the head of the btlITcl as the fauret is, forced inward.
The advantages of my invention will be readily seen, inasmuch as the tapping of a cask or barrel filled with new ale or beer (which is usually done by hand by driving in the plug in the head of the barrel, and insert ing the faucet therein) is attended with no little damage by loss of the liquor, occasioned by the gas confined in the barrel, which frequently causes the liquor, when the plug has been driven in, to escape with such force and rapidity as to defy all efiorts to insert the tap or faucet for some time, in consequence of which a great waste ensues.
Having thusidescribed my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hereinbefore-described apparatus for tapping casks or barrels of fermented liquors,
consisting of the Y-shaped frame A, adjusted to the head of the barrel by means of a thumbscrew, and auxiliary frame D, provided with the lever 0, post 0, rollers d, shaft I), cogs a and 0, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The Y-shaped frame A, having one foot or leg, B, made adjustable by means ofathumbscrew, so as to fit under the projecting edges of the cask, substantially as described.
y 3. The combination of the lever a, shaft 1), rollers d, cogs a and c, and post 0, with the punch F, provided with the spring-clamps,
operated by the thumb-screw g, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The punch E, provided with the rim or collar Z, and handle D, in combination with the socketed post 0, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix hereto my signature in presence of two witn'sses.
JOHN BARRETT.
