E.JOHNSON.. MALLET FOR TAPPING BEER KEGS.
No. 593,942. Patented Nov. 16', 1397.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
EMIL JOHNSON, OF ASHTABULA, OHIO.
MALLET FOR TAPPING BEER-KEGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 593,942, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed May 20, 1897. Serial No. 637,397. N m m To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mallets for Tapping Beer and other Kegs; and I do hereby depressure.
The invention is designed for use in ,connection with faucets having a central bore,
, through which after the faucet is driven into the keg there is forced a tube by which the beer is withdrawn.
In the ordinary manner of tapping the kegs the discharge-tube is first withdrawn from the faucet and a cork inserted in the small or inner end of the latter. 'The faucet is then driven into the keg and the tube inserted in the outer end of the faucet and forced through the same into the keg, then driving the cork in ahead of the faucet.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved mallet for driving the faucet into the keg without removing the tube therefrom and obviating thenecessity tional view of the same.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates an ordinary beer-faucet, having a vent 2, a central bore, an enlarged head 3, in which is seated an elastic washer 4, and a hollow screw-plug 5.
The numeral 6 designates the draw-0E or discharge tube or pipe, having perforations 7 in its inner end and provided at its outer end with a cock 8. This tube passes through the faucet, and both it and the faucet may be of any ordinary or suitable construction and form no partof the present invention.
The numeral 9 designates a mallet, preferablymade of wood and cylindroconical in shape, and around the head or cylindrical portion is a metal band 10. Formed in one side of said mallet is a slot 12, extending from end to end, with which the tube engages. The mallet is also provided with a projection 13, which is designed to be used after the manner of a hammer-head in knocking a faucet out of a keg.
The operation is as follows: The tube is inserted in the faucet with its inner end even, or nearly so,with the inner end of the faucet. The said inner or small end of the faucet is then placed against the cork or plug, which closes the faucet-opening in the keg. The mallet is then placed on the tube, which engages with the slot, so as to support the mallet in place, and by a few quick blows of the mallet, which slides upon the tube, the faucet is driven into the keg. The tube is then forced through the faucet into the keg.
By my invention there is a great saving in time and labor in tapping a keg, and there is also a saving in corks, as in the ordinary manner of tapping a new cork has to be supplied each time a keg is tapped.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article a mallet for tapping beer and other kegs, consisting of the cylindroconical wooden block, having a slot at one side extending from end to end, and a rectangular projection formed on the cylindrical portion diametrically opposite said slot, and the metal band fitting on the large or cylindrical end, formed with an open rectangular slot in its inner edge with which said projection engages, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature I
