IMPROVEMENT lN INSTRUMENTS FOR D'RIVING'A'ND EXTRACTING FAUCETS, BUNGSlXtc'. v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,228, dated February 8, 1876; application filed 1 September 20, 1875.
the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective view' of our tool or implement used for driving and extracting faucets or bungs; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same as j applied to a faucet, and in the act of withdrawing it from a cask; Fig. 3, a front view of a metallic ring designed to be placed around the tail of a faucet preparatory to driving the same in a cask or barrel.
Theobject of our invention isto provide a ready means of driving faucets into casks, and also withdrawing the same when necessary, in-a quick, simple, and easy manner. a
For this purpose we construct an implement consisting of a wooden mallet, provided with the usual handle A, having'at its end most remote from the head B a forked metallic claw, c, the extremities of which are each formed with a rounding projection or knob, d, and just back of the claw, toward the handle, with a heel, fi'supporting a roller, e, so arranged and pivoted thereto in proper bearings asto act as a movable anti-frictioufiflcrum.
To use our improved-fimplement, a metallic ring, h, is to be first placed around and on the tapering tail J of the faucet K, and preparatory to driving it into acask, L, as shown in Fig. 2, and which driving may be effected by v 'Witnesse's:
the wooden head of the mallet. -When once driven tightly in, should it become necessary to withdraw it, the fork or claw c of the implement is to be placed astride the tail J 'just' mg ring h, when the roller e in the heel f, constituting the fulcrum, will bear upon the head of the cask in such a manner as that, on pressure being applied to the handle or h'eadof the mallet in the direction of the cask, thefaucet will be drawn straight out, and released from.
the orifice in which it was previously driven.
Although the ring it in thiscase is made so as to be detached, which, perhaps, is prefera- I ble, as it then may be used on several kinds of faucets, as well as bungs, yet we propose in some instances to form it solidly and in one piece with the tail of the faucet; but, however constructed, shaped, or applied, thespirit of our invention remains the same.
We claim 1. The forked claw 0, provided withround- .ing projections or knobs d d, in combination with the heel f and roller 6, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The forked claw c,'in combination with the heel f and roller e, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. As a means of extracting faucets from casks or barrels, the herein-described forked tool or implement, in combination with the ring around the tail of the faucet,-substantially in the manner shown and set forth.
