HOGAN.
BARREL COCK.
No. 267,785. Patented Nov. 21. 1882.
1 [44711 253568 [32215 497 W-MMM 3 67 UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAT HEW HOGAN, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
BARREL-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,785, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed August 2,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: y Be it known that I, MATTHEW HOGAN, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Oocks,ofwhich the following'is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where Figural is a View, partly in section, of my improved device, showing part of the central opening and the location of the internal flanges or nibs. Fig. 2 is a view in cross-section of the same, showing disposition of the flanges and parts in view beyond plane of section.
My invention relates particularly to the class of fluid-cocks used in ale-barrels, beerbarrels, and the like, which are temporarily fixed in a suitable hole in the barrel-head when the contents are to be drawn out. These barrel-cocks are usually driven in by repeated blows of a heavy hammer or mallet, and after the contents of the barrel are withdrawn the cock is loosened by side-blows on alternate sides, and this treatment breaks the cock after a brief term of service.
My improvements are designed to obviate this weakness by the use of flanges suitably placed, and also to afford ready means for co n pling the cock to aleader-pipe to a pump.
, 1p the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the body of the cock, formed of suitable metal, as brass, having a tapering part, b, for insertion into the barrel, a head, 0, formed to receive the blows of a hammer in driving, and a branch, d, in which is titted any ordinary form of cook or valve 0. The branch cl is mortised-near the outer end for the reception of one end of a coupling-pipe,f, which is held in place on the outlet of the cock by pressure from the thumb-screw g or similar device. The inner end of the couplingfis adapted to fit the outlet of the cock, and has a suitable boss or shoulder on the opposite side as a seat for the thumb-screw, and the other end is secured to a pipe which leads to a pump, usually on the floor above.
In order to withstand thorough usage to which the device is subjected, the body has been cast with very thick walls, which. makes it too expensive; but to effect the same purpose I cast upon the inner side of the body ainward-ly-projeeting flanges a, in any desirable number, and thus make a very durable article at moderate cost, while leaving the outside of the tapering projection b in suitable condition for its office. The body is provided with small opening, as h, in the part that extends into the barrel, for the purpose of aEording an outlet to the fluid contents only of the barrel.
To use the device it is driven into the barrel in the usual manner, the coupling inserted in the mortise and pressed to its seat by the screw. It may be removed after loosening by the lateral blows with but little injury to the body, which at present breaks on about the plane of the section in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention-- 1. A barrel-cock having a tapering body provided with internal flanges, all substan tially as described. A i
2. In a barrel-cock, a mortised branch, d, provided with clamp-screw gorits equivalent, whereby the coupling fis held in place while the cock is in use, all substantially as described.
MATTHEW HOGAN.
