A, PAULSQN MECHANICAL BOX Filed April 16. 1926 Patented Dec. 27, 1927.
UNITED stares ARTHUR PAULSON, OFNEW YORK, N. Y.
MECHANICAL Box.
Appncaaon'fiied april 16, 192e. serial no. 102,483.
My invention relates lto improvements in boxes within which a tray is hinged having operative connection with the cover of the box so that when the cover is swungopen on its hinge the tray will also swing upon its hinge;` and the object ot my improvenient is to provide in a box a movable tray adapted to contain articles to be dispensed or otherwise removed from saidtray so that when the hinged cover `of the box is opened the tray will also be moved into a tilted position to thereby render more easily acces* sible as well as more conspicuous, the contents of the tray. y
i In the embodiment ot' the invention illustrated in the drawings the tray is adapted to hold chips such as are used iii card playing, although this form of tray is equally useful in dispensing cigars tor example, the tilting ot the tray facilitating the easy removal of its contents when the box is opened.
[n the drawings"y Fig. l is perspective View of my iin proved box.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2*-2 of Fig. l. i
Fig. 3 is a similar view but showing the parts in another position, and
F ig. 4 is a detail section on the line 4-4 oi Fig. 2. y
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
i Referring to the drawings the body of the box is indicated by the numeral 1 to Which is hinged at 2 a cover 3. A tray e is hinged at 5 to the bottom oi' the box along its iront edge, the hinges being of the piano type. The tray is provided with a series of oompartments 6, in this instance of semicircular configuration in cross section to conform to the shape' of the articles to be contained therein. A catch 7 may also be provided to lockthe cover in its closed position.
Pivoted to the cover of the box, inside and adjacent the hinge 2, is a lever 8 to the opposite end ot' which is pivoted another lever 9, the latter being pivoted at its other end to the bottom olf the box, the two comprising a compound lever of the elbow type.
Levers 10 and ll are pivoted together at their ends, their opposite ends being pivoted to the cover' and body of the box yrespectively to torni a buggy joint and positive means tor holding the cover in an open position. Levers 8 and 9 at their pivotalpoint l2 are adapted to swing in a slot 13 formed in the tray `and centrally located"longitudinally therein.` 'The levers 8 and 9 are arranged and so proportioned that when the cover 3 1s opened their ends adjacent the pivotlQ will contact with the inclined top 14 o1c the slot 13 and press upwardly thereon to'etect the swinging movement of the tray.
As the tray in this instance is niadeof wood, the inclined surface of the s101113y islined with a strip of metal l5V toreduce consequent "friction vand wear during-the movement ot the parts. The box as s iown herein may be covered with leather7 if de sired, to add to its appearance withoutintertering `with its mechanical operation.
In use chips, for example, may bel placed in stacks in the compartments 6, the lid 3 closed and `latched and the contents made easily transportable. 1When access is desired the lid is raised and tray is automatically brought into an inclined position as shown, sothat the chips maybe `quickly and easily removed from the different compartments in any number desired, the rear end of the tray being then uppermost and away from any interference oit the rear wall of the body oi the box so that there is a `spacey between the ends ot the compartments 6 and the cover 3 for the insertion oi' a. nger to remove the contents of the compartments.
Changes in details oi construction which are merely matters of orm'ot design are to be considered within the scope oi the invention. i i
I claim:
l. ln a box having a body and a cover hinged thereon, a tray pivoted within said body, levers pivoted together at one of their ends and connected to the cover and body of the box at their other ends respectively, the pivoted ends of said levers being adapted to engage said tray when the cover is opened and thereby tilt the tray. i
2. In a box having` a body and a cove hinged thereon, a tray pivoted within said body, levers pivoted together at one ot' their ends and connected to lthe cover and body ot the box at their other ends respectively, the pivoted ends oi' said levers being adapted to engage said tray when the cover is opened and thereby tilt the tray, and coact ing levers to hold the cover and tray in such position.Y
ln a box havfng a body and a cover hinged thereon, a tray pivotedwithin said bodyv and provided with an inclined suri'acc,
lli)
levers pivoted together at one oftheirj ends and connected to the cover and body of the box at their other ends respectively, the pivoted ends oi said levers being adapted toen-- gage the said inclined surface when the cover is opened and thereby tilt the trzrv"y and coacting levers to hold the cove-r and tray in such position.
4. A` box comprising ai body having bot-` tom, rear and sidewalls; away-contained WitliinxtheA body end hinged to the. forward edge, oi the bottoni Well@said tray? being Shaped to provide affront Wall, for the body;
a cover hinged to thereer WallofQthe body-7 and mechanism opt-:redtively connected to `the coven and adapted" to tilt the tray when the coverI is opened. y i i 5, A` boi( comprising o; body having bottorn, rear and side Walls; al tray conta-ined Within the bodyand hingedto the forward edge of the bottoni wall;I saidf tray being` shaped `to provide ert'ront wall furthe body a cover hingedtotlle rear wall of thebody, endfmechanlsni operatively connected' to the coveil and adeptedto tilttlie. tray Whenthe.
