" [Application Vled November 8,1926.v Serial No..14'2',056.v 1 i The present invention `pertains .to a-novel winding machine designed particularly for winding ribbon-like materialk upon acard in such a manner that thematerial is laid incontiguouswindings across the card.
Inan operation of this character the'material is necessarily moved relatively across the cardrandvheld stationary in a given yposition until one winding is completed.V Then the card or the guide, in the present` case thepguide, is Vmoved to theeneXt position topermit the. laying of the next adjacent winding. .It*will heevident that twosuccessive windingsmust'be made yin each final position before the A guide is Lpermitted to proceed in its reverse direction, otherwise the end windings will-be Jonly half as thick 'as the-intermediatewindings.
The accomplishmentof such a-function is the object of the ypresent invention. machine comprises essentially ai-frame in which is mounted a rotatablevcard holder andra slidable guide for the material to be wound.vk The device 'for a mechanism for driving the guide in such a manner that' the latter is shifted in a` step-by-step movement. Preferably,'a Geneva movement isy interposed in the gearing for this purpose. The particular guide driving device consists Vof a drum actuated by the above mentioned gearing and having on its surface a track which has a nutV connection-with the guide; `Thecons struction of this' track is such as to' adone step for each rotation of the holder and to I permit the guide to remain in its end positions during twov consecutive turns of the holderl l 'The'invention isA fully disclosed in the following'description and-in the accompanyingdrawings in which;V f Figure lisa plan 'view of the machine gr' Figure2 is afra'gmentary plan'view thereofr showing a `card'inserted.therein and prior Figure?) is asideelevation;Y f Figure 4 isa fragmentary'plan view showing a card inserted inthe machine and partly wound; W v

On this shaft is mounted a drum'lo, the detailed construction and `operation of which are described below.y One endof the sha-ft 15 carries a gear 17 as clearly shown in Figures 1, 8 and 5.
The frame side 2 isformed at ian intermediate point with a bearing 18 in'which is mounted anotherstub shaft 19. At the outer side 1 Adjacent the wheel 20held `bya nut'22, and at the other l24 to ywhich is attached a pin 25 adapted to side'of the-frame, this shaft carries apinion At both Sides of the pin 25,.the wheel'24` is reducedin thickness as at 27 topermit penetration', of the pointsv of the spider 23 Y'into the circle defined by the wheel 24.
The Vframe-2 is formed intermediate its legs with a Wehl-2OaL in which is drilled a series'fof bearing apertures 20h; LAny one of these apertures is adapted to receive `a pin 20c to which isfsecured by means of a nut 20d an intermediate gear 20 meshing with the gear 17 and pinion 20. By means of this train of gearing, the pinion 20 transmits niovement `to the drum shaft! l5.`
The upper end ot' each leg 4.- is formed with a pair ot bosses 28 designed to receive a pair of paraITeIduide rodst). These rods are bridged by a lblock 30 slidable thereon, and a pair of angle pieces 3l aremounted on the top of the block towforrn a space lying transversely thereof. Each member 3l has itslower or horizontal leg formed with a slot 32. By means otbolts 33l passed through the slots and into the'block 30, `the space 34 between the angle members may be ula'ted' in itswidth: lieg' surface' of the drumy 16 carriestwo spiI-wltraek segments 35, each extendinglongitnflinally ottlie drum andcovering: substxntallyhalt ofthe" circumference therey These"segments may be described" as: being directed oppositely to each other, rather than in parallel' relation, so that the endsl ot one segment lief adjacent the ends of the other. Theseadjacent ends are joined, and the" track is made cont-innousor endlessfby ineens of enrved segments 36 of less extent with reference to the circumference ot the drum. y, i
Into the base of the guide block 30 is loose 1y tlrreadeda screw 37 carrying a" mit 3S at its lower--` end. y Washer 39 is interposed betweelrthe nut and the block.` The loose mounting ot the ntut permits the latter to turn on the" eurves'ot the track, and the ends of the slot 40 are" furthermore flared as at 411 to avoid binding of the nut during such thrnfing movements.
In the use of the device the jaw ll is retraeted by means of the knob l2 in order to permit1 insertion ofl a card 42 on which the material is to be Wond. Then the knob 1=2 is released,- the card is clamped between the jaws 7 and ll by means oit the spring 13; The* material to be wound, which is of a ribbon-like" nature u is held in any suitable manner as on a ball or roll in front ot" the druml.V `One end of the material `is passed through the space* 34 the guide and is attached to the card by means of a fiat spring member carried by one end of thejaw 7. The card is rotated by turning the crank 8, whereupon the material is" wound upon the Garth i The (teneva inox-'ornent already described eii'ects' intermittentrot ation of the pinionQO, and this movement is transmitted to the drum lo, resulting in a step-by-step inovement ot the guide along the rods 2%). The gears andthe track are so' calculated that the guide will remain stationary for the greater part` ot' each turn of the crank S, during which period the material is wound once on the card and will then be moved rapidly to the next position by the Geneva movement. Consequently the material is laid on the card in contiguous windings 44 :is shown in Figure 4; i
It has been stated that two consecutive turns arerequned .on each ot the end wind niets befdrethe Guide' is reversed in its construction. i
Itxwill be evident that the ends of `titte track', or the entire configuration thereof, may possibly be designed in a different! Inanner to accomplish the samefnnctionof the machine, i. e., to retain the `guida3044.114: in the end positions WithreSpect to the drum during-two turns of the crank 8 for the purpose'discussed above in detail.` In` the present instance,` however,` this function is" ac? coinplished apparentlyby constructing the end segments 36 to have" a` considerably shorter radius of curvature than the main segments 35, whereby the movement of the guide is more rapid on the end' segments than elsewhere'. i i
The machine is furthermore construeted to provide for the, winding. of material of various widths. First, ithe angle `pieces 3l of the guide, are adjusted by means of the nuts in the slots 32 so that the spateV 34 conforms to thewidth ot' the material. Sed oiidly,` the train ot gearing. must bef 1fearranged so that each step movement ofthe guide will be equa-l in lengthto the widthL of the ribbon and will occur at intervals Gorre` spending with the rotation of the" card. y The calculation oi" the gears is a matter ofnley chanical skill already .tamiliar in the art and need not be discussed in detail.` All three gears 20, 20e and 17 areinterchangeable, but only the intermediate gearneed have` itsgcentre shifted in order that it shall reach the end gears. The provision for this adjustliient is inade in the several apertures 20 formed .in the web 201* of the traine side as' shown in Figure S. The gears are loose(forV re moval and tightened alter renewal by means ot thenuts already mentioned.` y
lVhile a specilie embodiment of the `in vent-ion has been illustrated and described, it that various alterations,
is to be understood in the details ot construction may beymade without departing fromthe spirit of the in A to traverse of material thereon,-gu1de actuating meansV vention as indicatedby the Yappended claim.
Having thus fully described thenvention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: n
In a winding machine including a rotatably supported card holder, a guide `arranged the said holder t0 wind a strip operatively associated therewith, gearing n-V termittently operate ,means and the terposed between actuating means, and a Geneva gear movement associated'with the said gearing to inthe guide actuating guide during the continuous rotary movelne t of the holder.
In witness my hand; K
