This invention pertains to card holders.l and relates more particularly to the provision of mea-ns whereby alargeor relatively flimsy card may ,be held in `an 4extended position. .The structure Vhereinafter described is in the nature of anattachment which can be readily secured to a card holder, which latter will hold an ordinary size card, `or one .having sufficient stability of body-to maintain its position. y

there is shown in Figs. 1 to 3 a -card clip or holderof the type setforth andtclaimed vin the patent above referred to, and which for thepurposes of the present case may be described generally as a'base 1, a face plate 2, a linger 3, which latter extends upwardly in spaced relation to the forward portion of thel face 2, the finger 8 being formed as'an in` tegralextension of a tongue 4. The finger 3, together with the face plate 2, provides means whereby a card maybe held in position, the card preferably contacting two outwardly extending lugs 5 and 6 struck out of the face plate and lying in a plane with the base or body 1. Any form of card holder, however, may be employed, so long as it provides means equivalent to the upstanding front or face plate 2 and preferably with a member such as the finger 3 for engaging the lower edge of a card.

I have found in practice, however, that a .card holder such as just described, will not maintain a large card unless it be stiff, or,

in other words, it will. not maintain a flexible card or sign in a flat or substantially` fiat condition.

Vith a view of :providing a .proper vsup-4 port for suchfa card or sign, I provide oneor more extenders which maybe readily slipped over the faceplate 2.` vOne of such extenders is denoted by 7 and is yformed from a strip or bar of sheet metal having its longitudinalA edgesinturned as at 8 and9. Such strip V and inturned edges are of a width to engage the face plate 2 when thestrip ,is slipped` downwardly over the upper end of the face plate, `asindicated in Figs. 1 to `3.

These two members 7 and 7 a may be readily n secured to ieach, other. in Aadj usted ,relation by a coupler, likewise formed of rsheet metal and preferably taking the form .best shown inFigsAiaIld5.y i ,V` The coupler maybe said .to comprise a plate as 10, substantially rectangularin form and having a pair oflips or fianges 11 land 12 inturned over one face, anda second pair of oppositely disposed lips or . flanges 13 and 14 vturned over inwardly and .toward ,the opposite face. Preferably the vbody will be produced with .oppositely extending lugs or upset portions as 15 and 15a` yto provide -friction Abetween the coupler and the members 7 and 7a which are inscrtedbeneath lthe respec` tive flanges 11 and 12, and 13 and 1 4.

iVith the extender' 7 positioned as in Figs. l, L2 and 3, the'lateral .extender .7 a ,may be moved up' or down by merely pushinglthe coupler or slide 10 up kor kdown upon the ex-- tender Tand said .member 7l may be .likewise moved endwise through vthe coupler.` There isthus 'produced an extender composedof two members, one of which can` be readily attached to the base or card holder proper, and the other of which may be adjusted ver tically with reference to said base, or transversely of the upright extender. In Fig. 1, a card as 16 is shown in dotted lines held at its lower portion between the lower portion of the extender 7 and the finger 3, the card extending upwardly past the lateral extender 7 a and resting at its upper edge against the upper portion of the vertical member 7. At- 17 (Fig. 1) there is indicated va shorter card, the upper edge of which extends inwardly beneath the inturned edge or iange 8a of lll) the cross extender. With this last arrangement the upper ed e of the card is lixedly held as Well as thedower edge thereof.

In Fig. 6 there is shown an arrangement of the base plate or holder with a vertical ly disposed extender as 7, a horizontally disposed extender 7a as in the showing above described, and attached to each of said extender elements are supplemental extendcrs, as 16 and 17, upon the vertical member 7, and 18 and 19 upon the horizontally disposed member. This arrangement will take care of a very flexible card or sign. It desired, the members 17 or the vertically disposed members 18 and 19 could be used l,toi the recept-ion of price marks or Labels7 pra vided of course the label proper did not exs tend over the same.

In Fig. 7 the two base plates or members are shown each having attached to the upwardly extending base plate 2 an extender as 7, which extenders are cross-connected by two horizontally disposed connectors or extenders 7a.

It is manifest from the foregoing that various combinations or arrangements of the extenders may be Workedout or utilized according to the nature of the card or sign to be supported. The arrangement does away with the necessity oi using an easel as is frequently done by window-dressers, and likewise enables the structure as a whole to be attached to a bolt of cloth, or to a series ot' superimposed boxes, as may be found necessary.

Vliet is claimed is:

1. A card or sign holder comprising a sheet metal base piece provided with an upwardly extending member and means associated and cooperating therewith to hold a card; and an extender produced of sheet metal bent to form and adapted at its lower end to embrace the upstanding member of the holder.

In a card or sign holder, the combination of a base provided with an upstanding member; an extender, said extender being formed from a strip of sheet metal having its longitudinal edges intnrned, said inturncd edges forming a means whereby the extender may be secured to the upstanding member; a second member oi like form; and a slide embracing and connecting said menibers at substantially right angles to each other.

As a new article of manufacture, an extender 'for card holders comprising two strips of sheet metal, each of which has its longitudinal edges inturned and said strips being connected by a slide the edges whereof, in opposed pairs, are turned inwardly toward the body of the slide, the edges of one pair extending toward one face and those ot the other pair toward the other iarfe oi the body ol the slide, which edges orerlie and embrace the said inturned edges ol the strips.

An extender 'or card holders compris ing two strips of sheet metal, each strip having its longitudinal edges inturned, and a connector for said members, said connector comprising a sheet of metal, the two opposite edges whereof are inturned over the sheet in one direction and the other edges inturned over the opposite face of the sheet7 said lirst pair of inturned edges engaging the inturned edges oi one oi' the strips and the second pair ol: inturned edges upon said plate engaging the inturned edges upon the second extender strip.

5. An extender for card holders comprising two strips of sheet metal, each strip having its longitudinal edges inturned, and a connector for said members, said connector comprising a sheet oi metal, the two opposite edges whereof are inturned over the sheet in one direct-ion and `the other edges inturned over the opposite face of the sheet, said .first pair of inturned edges engaging the inturncd edges ot one oi the strips and the second pair of inturned edges upon said plate einig-aging the inturmal edges upon the second ex tender strip; and projections extending lrom` the body ot the plate in opposite directions, said projections engaging the strips and lricftionally holding the paris in their adjush-al relation.
