SIG-N.
Original application filed October 4., 1921, Serial No. 505,322. Divided and this application filed I November ac, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES IV. G. HAN- NAH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in signs.
This application is a division of my copending application for signs, filed October 4, 1921, Serial No. 505,322, which application has matured into Patent No. 1,403,772, issued Jan. 17, 1922.
An important object of the invention is to provide a sign body having a central opening, within which is adjustably mounted a strip carrying a hand, the opposite sides of the strip bearing the data concerning the town or location.
Otherv objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation ofa sign embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side, and,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2. I
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi ment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a sign body, which is preferably circular, although it may be made in any other suitable shape. This sign body is mounted upon posts, or legs 6, and secured thereto by any suitable means. The sign body is provided with a horizontal central opening 7, and the sign body is provided upon its front face, which is preferably painted, with advertising data 8 and 9, which of course may be varied, as may be desired.
In order that the attention of the driver of a vehicle may be closely called to this advertising data, I provide strip 10, having thereon data 11, embodying the name of the desired town or location. with the distance from the same. The strip 11 has the same information upon the opposite. sides thereof. The strip 10 is provided at one end with a hand 12, integral therewith, th1s Serial No. 519,024.
hand pointing in the direction of the town named in the data 11. The strip 10 is detachably held in place within the opening by bolts 13, engaging the posts '6.
It is thus seen that the strip may be read Specification of Letters Eatent. Patg nired Blav 30 i922 7' v This arrangement is important inasmuch as it places the name of the town in close relatlon to the advertising matter, and hence compels the driver to View the matter. It also makes provisionwhereby the hand may point in either direction, as necessary, and has the advantage of enabling advertising the hand to be formed integral with the strip. p Y
In view of the foregoing description, it is will be readily understood. 7 It is to be understood thatthe form of tending substantially horizontal, said body being provided with advertising data above and below the central opening, means to support the body, a stripadapted to be mounted within said opening and provided at one end with a hand'permanently .connected therewith, said strip being provided upon its opposite sides withdata which is identical, said data indicating in substance the name and location ofthe desired place, and means for detachably holding said strip,
thought that the advantages of the invention within said opening, whereby the strip may, v
be shifted so that its either direction and the data upon either side may be properly read.
2. In a sign of the character described, a pair of upstanding posts, a body secured to the posts embodylng a pair of spaced sub-' stantially fiat members forming an opening between the same, said post extending across the opening, said substantially fiat members hand may point in I carrying advertising data above and below the opening, a strip mounted Within the opening and provided upon opposite sides with data which is identical, said data indicating in substance the name and location of the desired place said strip being provided atone end with a hand formed integral therewith, said hand pointing in the direc tion of the location referred to in the ad- Vertising data upon the strip, and elements carried by the strip and detachably engaging said posts, whereby the strip may be reversed.
3. In a sign of the character described, a body provided with an opening extending throughout the entire length of the same in one direction, said body carrying advertising data in close proximity to the opening, means to support the body, a strip adapted to be mounted within the opening and provided at one end with a hand permanently secured thereto, said strip being provided upon its opposite sides with data which is similar, said data indicating in substance the name and location or the desired place in the direction of which the hand is pointing, and means for detachably holding the strip within said opening.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
CHARLES W. G. HANNAH.
