DISPLAY CARD- APPLICATION FILED 'FEB. 23. 1922.
Patented Oct. 3, 1922 fawn far:
(/zarlea J CHARLES .B. GOES, OF CHICAGO, JILLINGIS.
DISELA'Y CARD.
Application filed February 23, 1822.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Cntannns B. Goes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Cards, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings and to the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to displaycards or display easels as they are sometimes called designed for use for advertising purposes. and more particularly to the knockdown type which when folded for use are adapted to stand in a vertical position. with or without a self-contained brace or easel.
The invention consists in the novel de vices and combination of devices herein illustrated, described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, fully assembled and standing in an erect position.
Fig. 2 is a transverse. horizontal, sectional view, taken upon the dotted line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of the device.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a detail showing a modified form of securing the back iii-embers to the front member.
In the drawing. A represents a sheet, preferably of cardboard generally rectangular in. form and having a length considerahly in excess of its width. Its lower edge 1 is. preferably, straight so as to form a base for the support of the device. its side margins may be given any desired contour or configuration. as for instance that shown. at 2. it is understood o f course that this pa rt A umy be of any size and shape. depcmling on the use to which it is to be put.
To this board A are secured two side men]- bcrs B and C. The side member ll, shownin Fig. 5, is substantially rectangular in shape and is provided along one of its longitudinal margins with an attachingflap 3 adapted to be secured by any suitable means. as for instance mucilage, to the inside surface of One margin of the front member A,
Serial No. 538,682.
as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The other side member C has a similar flap 4 adapted to be secured to the inside surface of the other margin of the front member A. 3 and 4: are made flexible with respect to the member B and C by scored or weakened lines 5 and 6 respectively.
From the other side margin 7 of the member B there projects a tongue 8, joined to the member B by a narrow section 9, leaving recesses 10, 10, on both sides of the tongue 8 adjacent to the side edge u. Through the member 0 is an aperture or opening- 11 of a shape adapted to receive the tongue 8. in opposite corners of the opening 11 are recesses 12, 12, the distance between the recesses being approximately equal to the width of the tongue 8. The distance between the innerinargins ofthe reesses 10, 10, of the member B is approximately equal to the width of the opening or aperture 11. Thus when the two parts B and C are brought together as shown in Fig. 3, the tongue 8 is passed through the opening 11 along the line 18 until the recess 10 of the member B is opposite the recess 12 of the member C, whereupon the side portions 14 of the tongue 8 are moved so as to be superposed upon the side portions 15 of the member C and then the two members B and C may be moved laterallyuntil they are in the interlocked positon shown in F ig. 3. In order to move the members B and G into this locked position, it will first be necessary to bend the front member A into the curved form as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This is readily accomplished for it will be understood that the distance between the points of attachment of the two back members B and C to the front member A, when the latter lies flat. is greater than when the front member A is bent, and is greater than the width of the back as a whole when its two members B and C are in interlocked will be found in use that this folding of the member A upon the line 16 for convenience in shipping will not interfere with The flaps 60 fit may also be convenient 1.0-5
the part A standing in an erect position when the device is assembled. due to the flexing of the member A, as a whole, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In many instances. the easel or display card just described will stand in an erert position, resting upon the lower edge 1 of the front member and the lower edges 17 and 18 of the members B and C which together form the back. It may, however, be desirable to further support the display card and this I accomplish by means of an easel or brace member D. The member D is formed out ofthe member C by cutting along the lines 19. 9.0 and 21. and by scoring along the diagonal line 252 which runs from the base of the line 20 to the line 21, and scoring also along the vertical lines 23. 24.
Assuming that the parts B and C are interlocked as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the easel or brace member D is then bent along the scored lines 23 and 2e until it stands substantially at a right angle to the surface of the member C, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In order to more securely hold or lock the easel or brace member D in this position, a locking flap E is bent upon the horizontally scored line 25 until the notch 26 in its upper edge engages the inside edge 21 of the aperture formed in the easel D by the out line 21. This will be clearly understood by reference to Figs. 1 to l, inelusive. The object of cutting along the diagonal line 20 and of scoring along the line 25 is to permit this locking flap E to be bent over into a horizontal position for the purpose of engaging and locking the memher D. It will be understood of course that where the device is of such a nature as to readily stand on the base lines 1, 17 and 18, the card may be simplified in construction and cost of manufacture by omitting the cutting along the lines 19.. 20 and 21 and the scoring of the parts necessary to form the flaps D and E.
In some instances, thenature of the cardboard. used may be such to produce undue wear along the scored line 6. This may be avoided by reversing the position of the flap 4. and attach it to the front member A in the modified form as shown in Fig. 6'. In this modification, the flap 4; is bent to-- ward the hack instead of being bent toward the front as in the form first described.
It will be understood that the supporting memberD need not in all cases he used. The
size of the device and the curve given to the front member A. may be sufficient to produce a base.
I claim as my invention:
1. A display card of the class described, comprising a front member, a hack consisting of two separate members, said back members each having a marginal flap by which they are secured to opposite rear margins of the front member. and interlocking means on the two back members whereby when interlocked the front member is caused to assume curved position, said interlocking means comprising a notched aperture on one back member and a notched tongue on the other.
2. A display card of the class described, comprising a front member, a back consisting of two separate members. said back memhers each having a marginal flap by which they are secured to opposite rear margins of the front member, and interlocking means on the two back members whereby when in terlocked the front member is caused to assume a curved position, said interlock ing means comprising a notched aperture in one back member and a notched tongue pro jecting from the free margin. of the other back member.

5. In a display card of the class described, a front member, a hack comprising two separate back members, each secured along one of its margins to the front member, and means for interlocking the free margins of the contacting members, one of said back members being cut on a horizontal line and scored on a vertical line to include a brace member which when folded along the severed line, will. stand at an angle to the surface of said back: member. and. a lug cut from the same back member and its brace member and adapted to be folded on a scored line to engage and lock the brace member.
6. In a display card of the class described, a front member, a back composed. of two separate members. said back members being each provided with a marginal flap by which they may be secured to opposite rear margins of the front member, longitudinal scoring between each back member and'its flap, a notched aperture in one back member and a notched tongue projecting from the free margin of the other back member, and
adapted to engage said aperture whereby the two back members may be brought into interlocked relation.
