IMPROVEMENT IN MEASURING PACKAGED FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165., 131, dated June 29, 1875; application filed July 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. TALCOTT, of the city and county of Ashtabnla, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Impfiwed Means of Measuring Packaged Fabrics', of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying draw- 1ng.
My invention relates to an improved means of indicating the length of any fabric that is folded or rolled by printing, stamping, or otherwise attaching to it numbers that denote the yards, feet, or inches, as may be desired.
The object is to afford a means of measuring without the use of a stick or other measurer, and also to disclose the exact length of any piece without unrolling or opening it. By effecting this object I save the necessity of measuring the goods when they are cut from the piece, as well as when inventories of stock are taken.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roll of cloth, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a View of a piece of cloth unfolded, the lines passing through the numerals indicating the folds.
The accompanying drawing represents a piece of goods partly unrolled. The numerals denote the number of yards. The piece is so wrapped or folded that the first yard within the roll will be numbered one, (1,) the second two, (2,) and so on until the outside end is reached, upon which is placed the total number of yards. The first yard cut will be the last yard in the roll or piece, and so on until the piece is disposed of.
If it be desired to remove a yard or any fraction thereof, the numbers afford a sufficient guide. The fractional part being removed, the number of yards left in the piece is indicated by the last figure upon the goods. Thus, if one yard is cut off from a piece of twentyfour yards the figures 23 will disclose the ex act length of the remainder.
It is obvious that in the case of prints and analogous goods the numbers may be stamped or otherwise attached to the fabric by means of dies connected with the press, and that machinery of simple construction may be employed to attach the numbers to goods of other kinds in the manufacture of which a press is not used. It is also plain that the numbers may be printedor stamped so that they will disappear upon the fabric being washed, which will obviate any loss of material ordisfigurement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improvement in the art of measuring fabrics, indicating in graduated numbers the yards the bolt contains, the numbers being printed, stamped, or otherwise arranged upon or in the edge of the fabric, and on the yard folds thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improved meaus of measuring packaged fabrics, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
