Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED F. OHATMAN, OF NEWv YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO A. F. OHATMAN AND J. PECARE, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-SPRING'.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,512, dated January 2'7, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. F. CHATMAN, of the city of New York, county of New York, State of New York, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and Improved Door, Shutter, and Lid Spring; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I form a. tube or cylinder A A of any desired length or size, the tube to be made of metal, wood or any other substance. Within the tube or cylinder A a wire Bl is doubled any number of times required and inclosed within t-he tube as shown by B B B. The ends of these wires have their ends reversed as at O, O, O, O. On the ends of tube A are caps C, C; through which the wire B B passes.
Themanner of operation is as follows:
The wire B B is passed through the hinges of the door, shutter or lid and forms the hinge of a pair of hinges; and the bent ends of the wire O, O, O, O are fastened to the door, shutter or lid by staples or otherwise. This spring hinge can be made, by reversing the ends, to either keep closed or open any door, shutter, lid, &c.
I do not claim helical springs, nor a helix wound around a wire, nor a helix alone, but
Vhat I do claim, and desire to. secure Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A wire B-B, doubled lengthwise on itself, two or more times, in the manner described in the specification, so that it will form a spring by opposite forces when inelosed in a cylinder, or tube, and not otherwise, to be used as a hinge in combination with the spring or without the hinge.
A. F. OHATMAN.
