Description

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFTOE.
KINGSTON GODDARD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,831, dated March 17, 1857.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, KINGSTON GODDARD, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Hinge, capable of being directly acted upon by a torsionbar, for the purpose of closing the door to which itmay be applied.
The nature of my invention consists in the formation of a socket in the end (or adjusted to the end of an ordinary hinge so as to form part of it) of such a form as will cause a torsion bar to act directly on the hinge where the angular or flattened end of such bar is let into said socket. Then two such hinges are fastened upon any door in the Ordinary way, with the leaves containing the sockets fastened correspondingly upon the door and jamb upon which the door is hung, it is evident that an attemptto open said door will be resisted by the torsion bar resting in said sockets. Said resistance tending to close said door the moment the power to open is removed.
In t-he accompanying drawings A is the socket; I), the torsion bar; c, the door; e e
the jamb; 7L the hollow hinge. In adjusting said hinges to any door; it is only necessary to see that while One hinge has the socket end stationary, while the other moves in a rotary manner, upon its pivot; upon the opening of the door.
The torsion bar is easily adjusted by entering One end into one socket and springing the other end thereof into the opposite or corresponding socket, said bar being held in its place by the usual mode or by passing through a. hollow hinge, of which the bar shall form the pivot.
The advantages of my invention are cheapness, simplicity and elegance.
That I claim as my invent-ion is The socket in the end (or adjusted to the end so as to form part thereof) of the hinge, to be acted upon directly by a torsion bar, substantially as specified.
I am aware that torsion bars are used in various ways to close doors; I therefore do not claim the torsion bar; but only the hinges as specified.
KINGSTON GODDARD.
