Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT -oEErcE JOHN S. GRAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-SPRING.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 22,554, dated January 11, 1859.
T o all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN S. GRAY, of the city7 county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improved Devices in Attaching and Straining Torsion I-Iinges for Doors, &c.; and I do hereby declare and ascertain my said invention, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l, is a perspective View of the socket and hinge combined. Fig. 2, is a bracket independent of the hinge; Fig. 3, turning bolt.
My improved spring is designed to coinbine convenience of arrangement with liacility of operation and a permanence in the construction and application together with cheapness of cost greater than I have heretofore known in devices for the same purpose.
The construction is as follows: A socket a has an extension plate Z) cast with it as seen in Fig. 2. In this socket there is a turning bolt c (shown detached in Fig. This bolt has a square hole e in its upper end at its center, into which the end of the spring d fits. The exterior form of this end of the bolt o is a hexagonal or some other polygonal prism, and below it is enlarged and of any figure. Through this part I make oblong holes h such as an ordinary screw driver or similar instrument will readily enter by which the bolt can be revolved in straining the spring either way.
j' is a hold-fast and consists of a collar that just ts over the upper end of the bolt c and a tang that projects from it and resting against the door frame or post prevents the bolt from revolving. When the bolt is to be turned by a screw driver as above named this socket is raised from the bolt as seen in Fig. 2, and after the boltis turned it is replaced as indicated by red lines in the same igure. It will be noticed that the hold-fastf cannot be lost or inislaid as it is always connected with the spring when the parts are once in place by screwing plate Z) of socket a to the door frame. Instead of forming the socket as in Fig. 2, this part may form one section of a butt hinge as in Fig. l, the bolt c being the pivot.
Having thus fully described my improvement what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the socket a, b, bolt c and hold-fast with the torsion spring con structed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN S. GRAY.
Titnesses z JAMES V. HYATT, J. J. GREENOUGH.
