IMPROVEMENT IN SNAP-HOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.165, 122, dated J une 29, 1675; application filed May 2,1, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE REYNOLDS, of Unionville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to that class of snaphooks which open by drawing back a slide,

and close automatically by means of a spring.

My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the hereirrdescribed devices for opening, closing, and locking the tongue of the hook.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a top view of my improved snap-hook. Fig. 2 is a side View, with one of the sides of the rear part removed to show the :interior construction.

a is the hook. b is the tongue. c c are the sides of the rear part of the hook, which is formed into a hollow chamber, open on top, and into which the rear end of the tongue b is jointed upon a pivot, t', passing through the two sides. This chamber also Vcontains the mechanism for operating the tongue. e is a slide, which can be moved back and forth a On the top it has the knob or handle f for drawing it back, and a tlat rear part,.which extends to therear, and covers the opening which contains the mechanism for operating the tongue.

The forward lower part of c forms a hook, g, which enters into a recess, b', upon the lower end of the rear part of the tongue b, which bends downward within the hollow chamber. This recess is of such a form that when the hook g is drawn back it engages with the rear lip of the recess and pulls it back, thereby depressing the forward end of the tongue 5 and when the hook is pressed forward it engages with the forward lip of the recess, and raises the ton gne by pressing it' forward. When the tongue is closed the hook rests under the forward lip of the recess b', in such a manner as to lock the tongue and prevent its being opened by pressure upon its forward end. s is a spiral spring within the hollow chamber, back ot' the slide e, to press it forward and close the tongue a'iter it has been drawn back by the thumb to open the tongue.

This snap-hook is intended to be' attached to a strap by the loop d, and to be used in the ordinary manner'.

What I claim as my invention is^ 1. The sliding hook g, in combination with the recessed tongue b, whereby the said tongue may be opened, closed, and locked, in the manner and for the purpose specified.

2. The slide e, with its hook g, in combination with the recess b', upon the rear end of the tongue b, and a spring, s, placed within the hollow rear chamber of a snap-hook, for opening, closing, and locking the tongue, substantially as herein described.
