SNAP HOOK. 7 No. 370,983. Patented Oct. 4, 1887.

* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY S. STAHL, OF CONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SNAP-HOOK.
EPE'CIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,983. dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed February 26, 1887. Serial No. 228,058. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY SILAS STAHL, of Gonnellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Snap-Hook, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved snap-hook. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
- The object of my invention is to provide a I 5 simple and efficient self-locking snap-hook.
My invention consists of a hook provided with a snap-spring normally resting against the inner surface of the hook, and a spring- 1 actuated latch adapted to lock the spring in its normal position.
The hook A is provided at its extremity with a notch, a, in which is received the end of a flat spring, B, which is secured to the shank of the hook by rivets. The spring B rests normally in the notch a. In the shank of the hook is formed amortise, b, in which is pivoted a latch, O, on the pivotal pin a. One end of the latch is capable of touching the inner surface of the spring B, and the opposite end projects through the back of the hook. Surrounding the pin 0 is a spiral spring, d, having one extremity resting on a lip, e, of the latch 0, while the other extremity rests against the shank of the hook. The spring (I 5 tends to throw the inner end of the latch O downward against the inner surface of the spring B. The extremity of the shank of the hook is provided with the usual oblong1oop,f.
\Vhen it is desired to introduce a ring or strap into the hook, the latch G is withdrawn 0 from the back of the spring B by pressing the outwardly-projecting end of the latch G downward toward the end of the shank of the hook. WVhen the spring is thus released, it may be pressed inward,opening the hook,so as to allow 5 of the introduction ofthe ring or strap. Upon releasing the spring B it returns to its position in the notch a, and the latch O is carried by the spring (2 against the back of the spring B, thus locking the spring B in its closed position.
Having thus fully described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a snap-hook, A, provided with the snap-spring B,and mortise b, of aspring-actuated latch, 0, adapted to hold the spring B in a closed position,substantially as described.
2. The combination of a hook, A, provided with the mortise Z), the spring B, attached to the hook, the latch G, pivotedin the mortise b, and the springd, adapted to throw the latch 0 against the inner surface of the spring B, substiantiall y as described.
SIDNEY S. STAHL.
