Application filed April '10, 1926. Serial No. 101,19'i'. i
- Thisinvention relates to a holder for folding check books, and has more particular reference; to a device adapted for attachment to a folding check book and shiftable relative to the latter so as to bepositionable for retaining thecheckbook in an opencondition, L y I, It is well known that considerable difficulty and inconvenience is experienced in m fillingoutthe checks of a folding check book by reason of the fact that such check books tendto return tofolded condition andmust be manually preventedfrom doingso while a check of the book is being filled out.
tion is to provide an improved device adapted for attachment to' a: folding check book .and shiftable thereon so as to be position-l able for effectivelyretaining the book in open or unfolded conditionso that theuser of the book will experience no difficulty or inconvenience in filling out a check ofthe book. A further object is to provide a check book holder of the above kind shiftable relative to the book for-permitting foldingof the same and embodyingmeans toengage the U folded portion of the check book for retaining the latter in compactly folded condition when not in use. y
A still further" object is to provide a check book holder of the above kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction as well as etficient in operation.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood,
and the same consists in the novel form,
combination and arrangement of partshereinafter more fully described, shown inthe an accompanying drawing and claimed. a
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is an inverted perspective view of a check book equipped with a holderconstructed in accordance with the present in vention, the check book being retained in The primary object of the present inveninsane Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective View Ofthe holder removed from. the. check hook.
' Referring more in detail to the drawings,
ofindicates a conventional form of folding iclheck book: vthe back andchecks of Which are folded upon I altransverse line intermediate their ends as at 6, wherebythe book normally assumes a folded condition for convenience in carrying the same inthe pocket .ofthe user. The present invention aimsto providea device adapted for attachment to a fold ng check book of thiskind and shift able relativeto the same soas to "be positionable for releasably retaining the check book in unfolded or open positiornand for this purposethe invention embodies a slide attachable to-and movable longitudinally on the check book. This slide preferably consists of a flat plate 7 yof comparatively stiff or rigid form and of a size to extend-across 1* the back oftheicheck book, the ends of the plate 7 being provided; with upwardly projecting flanges 8 adapted to engage the longi tudinaledges of the checkbook and having [inwardly extending lips9 upon the ends of said flanges 8 adapted to engage the margin of the uppermost check ofthe book whereby the device is slidably. retained upon the check book. The lipsQarespaced from the thickness of the unfolded check book when in original condition with none of the checks removed, so that the checks will be maintained in flat contiguous relation when the slide is applied to the book. It is thus apparent that if the check book is opened or ,p1ate 7 a distance substantially-equal tothe f unfolded and the slide moved longitudinally of the book from the position of Figure 1 to a position wherein the same extends toopposite sides of the fold 6 of the book, the latter will be effectively retained in flat open condition whereby the uppermost check of the book may be readily filled out without the expenditure of manual effort in retaining the check book open, and so that little difficulty, or inconvenience is experienced by the user of the book. When the book is no longer required for use, the slide may be shifted to the stub end of the checkbookso that the latter may readily return to its folded condition, and in order to retain the book in compactly folded condition when the slide is so shifted, the intermediate portions,
7 of the flanges 8 are extended above the lips 9 and provided [with inwardly directed flanges '10 adapted. to engage the folded end portion of the check book whereby the latter is prevented from swinging to a partly open gg unless he s les-is a all with:
awn from beneath the flanges 10.
An upwardly bowed leaf spring l1 is sattached at one end to the upper surface of the slide plate 7 so that the. spring lS-CllS- posed betweenthe plate and the back of the check book, -This'spring 11 compensates for reduction of the thickness of the check book as checks are detached therefrom whereby the slide is effectively retained in engagement with the book and the'checks main'tainedin compact relation until all of the checks are use'd'and removed. Obviouslypwhen the device is placed upon a full book of checksythe spring 11 will be flexed to substantially fiat form, and as the checks are removed, the spring will automatically tendto return to its bowed condition for "forcing the plate 7 away from the back of the check book and maintaining the lips 9 in tightengagement with the uppermost check'of' those remaining. The present device is preferably constructed from light -metal having sufficient jstiifness to withstand ordinary stramfand-in' order to reduce the weight of the device to a minimum, portions of the plate 7 may be removed as indicated at 12."
Obviously, suitable advertising matter may be placed upon the exposed surface of the plate 7 if desired.
From the foregoing description it is believed that the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invention' will be readily understood'and appreciated by those'skilled in the art.
' Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is l, A holder of the character described comprising a plate adapted to extend across the back ofthe folding check book and provided with end flanges projecting upwardly for positioningat the longitudinal edges of projecting upwardly 'beyond the lips and provided with inwardly directed flanges arranged to engage the folded portion of the check book when in folded condition."
2. A folding check book holder of the character described, comprising a body designed to position'across the ack of said book, a flange formed across each-of two opposite edges of said plates and designed to overlie adjacent edges of the check late book, and a plurality of inwardly directed" lips formed at the free, edge of each of said flanges, said lips on each flange being.divided into two portions lying in difierent planes, one thereof being designed to engage over the checks in the book at all times-the other being designed to receivethe free end of the checks when the checks arein' folded condition.
In testimonywhereof I aflix-my signature.
