Be it known that I, Bonner J. Cnoss, citizen of the United States, residing at May field, in the county of Santa- Clara and, State a of California, have invented a. new and useful- Bookbinding, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention is a note cover and binder for loose leaves or sheets of paper.

I In note books or covers, of which applicant is aware, when opened flat-on a table or desk, the leaves thereof close or tend toturn back over the hand of the writer from the pressure of the hand resting on the opened book. It is the usual practice to turn some of the leaves back under the book or to apply pressure on the two open sections of the book to maintain them in open position when writing. p

It is the object of the present invention to produce a loose-leaf note-book or cover,

which will open in such a manner that, when laid flat on a table, or used as a field or handbook, the leaves thereof will not close, and to produce a cover in which one or a. plurality of loose leaves may be bound and which will permit the readily and easy removal o-f any number of leaves or intermediate leaves Without necessitating the removal of the other leaves from the cover. 7

The invention further resides in the sundry details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.

In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is disclosed in the form in which it is considered to bev the best, but the invention is not limited to such form because it is capable of being embodied in other forms and it is to be understood that in and by the claims, following the description herein, it is intended to cover the invention in whatever form it may embody within the scope thereof.

Referring particularly to the drawings, in

which like characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views a-nd in the specification, the invention comprises a front or upper cover 1 and a relatively thick or back or tablet portion 2 both, preferably,

rectangular in shape and of rigid material,

To the one edge of-the tablet-portion is hinged, as at 3, a binder block 4-wl1ich is-""- preferably (Io-extensive with the said edge and has the same relative thickness as the body of the tablet 2, for the purpose which will later appear. The cover 1 is flexibly connected at 5 to a binder strip 6 corresponding to the binder block a. The binder strip and binder block lie opposite and parallel" to eachother and are equipped with means i for binding loose leaves or sheets of paper therebetween,

The back 2 is cut away or morticed inwardly from the upper edge thereof to provide a recess 7 in its outer face extending transversely thereof. This recess is of suflicient depth to accommodate binder block a when the book is opened as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4t.

By virture of this construction it is'clear that, when the book isop'einthe bound edges of the leaves are moved to and retainedat right angles with respect to the back or tab-let portion 2 of the cover, the result being that. the leaves will not and do. nottend to close upon the hand of the writergwhen the ordinary pressure 'is applied to thehook during the writing operation. f It is also, clear that on account of the angular formation of the binder block a which. is received in the recess 7 that the opened position of the leaves is insured to a greater degree as the pressure of the hand during writing increases, by virtue of an angular surfaceof the block engaging with the table or; the like, this being contrary to perforn'iance of the ordinary book or hinder as aboveset forth. to insure the opened position of: theleaves as the binder bloc-k is loosely hingeclnt 8 and is of such thickness as to correspond to the depth of the recess in the back 2 so that when received in the recess 7, t-he entire However, no pressure is required,

two cover sections, a binding portion at one of the edges of said sections for binding the leases therebetween, one of said cover Isections'having means to receive the binding portion when it is folded back under said cover section, said binding portion having a. flat surface thereon adapted to engage the surface of a table, desk or the like shen saidf sections are open, whereby said-binding portion is prevented from moving relative to said cover section when pressure is 'applied on either of said cover sections vhile lying on the table or the like, and a tendency of the open leaves between the sections to close, when said pressure, is removed.

7. In a bookbinding of the kind described, two cover sections having means for Linding leaves therebetween at one of their edges, at least one of said section's having a recess adiacent the binding means into which a 20 portion of the bound edge of the book enters, when the sections, are opened and hav; ing a relatively flat surface to engage with the surface of a desk, table or like suppont when the binding means has entered the recess, for the purposes set forth. I

8. Ina book binding of the kind described, two cover sections having means for bindin leaves therebetween at one of their edges and hingedly connected to said sections, at least one of said sections having a pocket adja} cent the binding means, said pocket being positioned in the cover section whereby the binding means is retained in said pocket when said pocketed cover section is lying on or engaged by a relatively flat surface and the cover sections are opened.
