Description

l H. D. McKINNEY. Toe-Weight and Quarter-Bout Attachment for Horses.
Patented June 29,1875.
I m'n/ l /w Qrrrc IMPROVEMENT IN TOE-WE|GHTS AND QUARTERBOOT ATTACHMENTS FOR HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,014, dated June 29, 1875; application filed March 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. MCKINNEY, of the city of J anesville, Rock county and State of VviSCOl'lSlI], have invented a New Mode of Attaching a WVeight to the Toe of a Horses Foot, and also a Quarter Boot by the same means, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to regulate the action of a horses fore feet by placing, and firmly attaching, a weight upon the toe, and at the same time thoroughly and eftectually protect the hind part of the fore feet from injury by overreachin g of the hind feet, so that the same strap which holds the weight 0, Fig. 3, to its place, shall also hold the quarter-boot upon the hind part of the foot, as shown in Fig. 3.
The Figures 1, 2, and 3 illustrate the different parts of the invention and the combination of the parts.
The weight 0, Fig. 3, is made of some metallic substance, of sufificient gravity, and of any size that experience shall prove to be necessary, and according to the difficulty to be overcome or corrected, or the object to be attained, and is fitted to and placed upon the front of the hoof and provided with a spur at its lower extremity, as seen at a, Fig. 1, which enters a socket provided for it in the toe of the shoe. As seen at b, Fig. 2, loops 6 e are rigid and set upon the front of the weight U, Fig. 3, through which the straps d d are passed, which are attached to the quarter-boot when one is used, or simply passed around the foot when one is not used.
Fig. 1 represents a slip or plate with rigid loops 6 e, and with spur a at the lower extremity, which enters socket b in the shoe, Fig. 2, in the same manner as weight 0, but is made as light as possible, serving only the purpose of holding the straps cl d in their places, which are attached to the quarter-boot,
and when a weight is not used, socket bis provided with an opening out of the front or toe of the shoe to permit dirt or gravel to pass out, and to facilitate cleaning.
The spur a, Fig. 1, should be made somewhat in the form of a hook, so as to prevent its slipping out.
I claim aslny invention The weight 0 provided with loops 0 e and spur a, in combination with the socket b in the shoe and the fastening-straps, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
- HENRY D. MCKINNEY.
