R. A. BATES JOURNAL BOX Filed Dec. 19, 1924 [ITO/m5) have been found liable journal box having the Patented Nov. 15, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD A. BATES, OF BERWICK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 AMERICAN CAR AND FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF NEW YORK,
N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
JOURNAL Box.
Application filed December 19, 1924. Serial No. 756,941.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of a journal box constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sheet metal plate forming the rear wall of the box; and
Fig. A is a partial verticalto a larger scale, taken on the Fig. 2.
Cast journal boxes,
section, drawn line 4cl of as generally made, to be broken by'the shocks of service. The outer wall of the dust guard pocket or rear wall of the box is the part which has: failed most often and most failures have rendered the boxes unfit for further use. A cast journal box having a rear wall of a non-frangible metal would to a great extent prevent the failure of the cast box at this place. It is an object of this invention to provide an improved cast rear wall formed of a non-frangible metal. It is also an object of this invention to provide a cast journal box having the rear wall formed of sheet metal, pressed to the required shape and fixedly secured to the remainder of the box during the casting operation, the sheet metal rear wall being inserted in the proper position in the mold when the remainder of the box is cast.
As shown in the drawings, the rear wall of the box 1 comprises a flanged metal sheet 2 provided with the usual opening 3 to receive the axle, the sheet 2 in the drawing being shown as formed with a continuous flange l extending along both sides and'the bottom of the sheet, but it is to be understood that the sides and bottom may be separately flanged. This flange is provide with spaced openings 5 which permit of the cast metal of the remainder of the box interlooking with the flange to secure the sheet to the remainder of the box. In order'to more positively secure the sheet 2 to the remainder of the box, the openings 5 are tapered as at 6 so that the cast metal which fills the openings forms tapered plugs as at 7 which securely interlock the flange with the remainder of the box. As shown in Figs. 2 and i, the flange 4 is of the dimensions of the inside of the dust guard opening and the cast metal of theremainder of the box flows on the outside of the flange as at 8, so that in the shrinking of the cast metal during cooling, there is no tendency for the cast metal to pull away from the flanges or to pull the plugs 7 from the openings 5 in the flanges. It will be noted that the flange i bears against the inner wall 9 of the dust guard opening where the inner wall 9 joins the wall 10 of the box so that strains are transmitted through the flange 4 directly to the box Wall 10 and there is no danger of the wall 4 be ing released by the breaking of the plugs 7. What is claimed is: 1
1. A journal box having a body formed of cast metal and a rear wall formed of material substantially softer than the material of the body and having relatively non-frangible characteristics.
2. A journal box having a body formed of cast metal and a rear wall attached to said body during the casting of the box and formed of material substantially softer than the material of the body and having relative ly non-frangible characteristics.
3. A. journal box having a body formed of I non-malleable cast metal and a rear wall, se-
cured to said body during the casting thereof, said rear wall being of softer material than the cast metal body whereby to be distorted under shocks. I
4. A journal box formed of cast metal and having a circumferential flange at the rear end thereof, and a substantially non-frangible rear wall interlocked to said casting at the marginal flange during the casting of the box.
5. In a journal box, a. cast metal body, an
outwardly extending marginal flange formed at the rear thereof, and a sheet metal rear wall supported by the marginal flange and secured thereto during the casting of the box.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand;
RICHARD A. BATES.
