My invention relates to journal boxes for use on railway cars and has particular reference to means for protecting the journal box lugs against wear,
In the present day railway car trucks, the journal box is generally formed a an integral part of the side frame. On the top wall of the box is provided an integral cam-faced lug to which is hinged a lid or journal box cover, said lid carrying resiliently actuated means slidably engaging the said cam faces by means of which the lid is held either in closed position or in open or elevated nal box lids. These means, on opening and closing the lid, eventually wear away not only the cam faces against which they bear, but also the opening in the lug through which passes the pin or pintle affording a pivotal connection for the lid. Any looseness in this connection permits the lid, upon movement of the car, to flap and vibrate, consequently accelerating the wear of the engaging parts.
Refacing or building up worn cam faces is an expensive operation and if the journal opening in the lug is also worn, refacing the cam faces alone will not entirely eliminate any looseness in the assembly. Replacement of the lug is impractical since it involves not only the cost lug, by cutting it off the box, but also the arduous task of properly positioning and welding on the new lug.
I have devised means to overcome these diffculties, and it is the object of my invention to provide inexpensive, easily replaceable wearing means on the journal box lugs.
My invention contemplates providing on the journal box lugs readily replaceable wearmeans comprising a cam face sheathing portion and bushing portions, the sheathing portion being sleeved over the cam faces of the lug and the bushing portions fitting into the journal opening in the said lug.
These and other objects of my'invention will be apparent from the specification and drawings,

Describing my invention in detail and referring first to Figure 1-3, the journal box (fragmentarily shown) generally indicated 2, comprises a top wall t on the top of which adjacent the outboard edge thereof is formed the integral lug, generally designated 6, said lug comprising the integral inwardly flaring spaced parallel legs or pedestals or- bracket ribs 8, 8 at opposite ends thereof, said ribs including hub portions Ill (Figure 2) between which extends the integral member or body [2 of the lug formed with cam faces 14 and I6 (Figure 3) at the front and top thereof, said member also having a rear face 18 and being necked down orrecessed as at H, at the bottom where it joins the said journal box top wall 4in the usual manner and presenting the converging under surfaces 20 and 22. An opening 24 is provided in the lug 6, said opening extending transversely of said ribs through the hub portions thereof and-longitudinally through the said member 12, the opening 24 being adapted toreceive a pin or pintle means (not shown) journaled in the lid (not shown) inthe usual manner.
Awear member 26 is sleeved over the lug 6, the wear member 25" having at opposite ends thereof the downwardly bent flat annular disc tures merging into the integral intermediate wear plate or sleeve or sheathing portion 34 contoured to the said member I2 and having the angularly related webs 36, 38 and 40 corresponding in angularity to that of said faces I4, I6 and I8 (Figure 3) respectively and tightly pressed thereagainst and encompassing the same.
It will be appreciated from a consideration of Figures 1-3 that the webs 36 and 38 of the mem ber 34 thus provide the cam surfaces 42 and 44 against which an associated member (not shown) may bear in the usual manner for hOlding the lid on which it is usually mounted in normal open or closed position.
To secure the sleeve 34 to the member I2, the lower edges of the webs 36 and 40 are curled under the said under surfaces 20 and 22 of the member I2 as at 46 and 48 respectively, as illustrated in Figure 3.
Within the opposite ends of the opening 24 are positioned bushings 50 which may be provided with annular plates or flanges 52, 52 of the end caps, each bushing passing through the opening 30in the adjacent element 28 and thus additionally securing the wear member 26 to the lug I2. The flanges 52 are each held in assembled position on the lug I2 and interlocked therewith by the integral arms 56 projecting from one side of each annular plate 52, said arms passing behind the adjacent bracket rib 8 and being bent against the inner surface thereof as at 51, as shown in gure 3.-
In assembling the device shown in Figure 1, the preformed wear member 26 is sleeved over the lug so that the cuplike structures 32, 32 of the said member fit snugly on the hubs I0, I of the lug and at the same time the webs 36, 38 and 40 fit snugly on the faces I4, I6 and I8 respectively.
Thereafter, the portions 46 and 48 of the webs 36 and 40 are bent inwardly into the respective recesses I1, I"! of the lug until they bear against the respective surfaces and 22.
The bushed portions 50 of the end caps are then inserted through the openings in the disc elements 28 in the wear member 26 and extend into the opposite ends of the complementary opening 24 'in the lug at which time the flanges 52 of each of the end caps bear against the outer face of the adjacent disc elements 28. The arm 53 of each end cap is then bent around the adjacent rib 8 so that it snugly engages the inner surface of the said rib 8.
Referring now to Figures 4-6 illustrating another form of my invention, it will be observed that the construction of the lug I00 is unchanged from that described in connection with the previous modification, said lug I00 being mounted on the top web I02 of the journal box, generally indicated I04, and having the inwardly flaring bracket ribs or legs I06 at opposite ends thereof with the hub portions I08 between which extends the integral member IIO having the usual cam faces H2 and H4 at the front and top; thereof, and the rear face II6 (Figure 6). The lug is necked down or recessed as at H! at the bottom thereof providing the under surfaces [I8 and I20.
Within the lug I00 is provided the'opening I22 serving the same purposes as the opening 24 described in connection with the previous modification. 7
On the opposite ends of the lug are positioned the wear members generally designated I24, I24, each of said members comprising an annular disc or flange portion I26 having a centraliopening I28 which may be formed by extruding, the bushing' I30 from said disc, said bushing I30 fitting into the adjacent end of the said lug opening I22.
Each disc portion I 26 rests against a side I32 of the adjacent hub portion I08.
An arm I33 extends from the edge of each disc portion I26 and passes behind the adjacent rib )6, said arm carrying an integral wear plate or sleeve or sheathing member I34 preferably projecting at right angles therefrom and contoured to the faces of said lug by being bent thereover in such manner that it closely adheres to said faces. It will be observed in considering Figure 5 that the sleeve or sheathing members I34, I34 of the wear members I24, I24 are arranged in tandem and substantially cover the lug faces from end to end and provide the cam surfaces I36 and I38 upon which may ride in the usual manner the resiliently actuated member (not shown) carried by the journal box lid (not shown) To more adequately secure the sleeve member I34 to the lug I00 the bottom edge of the web portion I 40 (Figure 6) of the sleeve member I34 is bent as at I 42 under the adjacent under surface I I0 of the lug.
In assembling the device shown in Figure 4, each bushing I30 is fitted into one end of the opening I22 with the associated flange I26 bearing against the outer surface I32 of the hub I08. The arm I33 is then bent so that the offset or recess I35 therein snugly engages the inner surface of the hub I08 to afford an interlock therewith. Thereafter, the member I34 is bent from the position shown in dot and dash lines in Figure 6 to the position shown in solid lines therein so as to snugly confine and interlock with the portion I I0 of the journal box lug. One of the wear elements I24 is shown in preassembly position at the top of Figure 4 and the other wear element is shown in final assembled relationship with the journal box lug.
Figure 7 illustrates another modification of my invention, and it may be noted that the construction of the lug I is the same as that in the previous modifications.
The wear member I52 is identical with that shown in Figures 4-6 with the exception that the offset portion of the arm I54, which passes behind the adjacent rib I56 of the lug, has an inturned bottom edge I58 extending into the recess I60 of the lug and clamping the adjacent portion of the lug for thus securing the wear member on the lug and especially securing the portion I62 thereof sheathing the cam faces I64 and I 66 and the rear face I68 of the said lug.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited by the exact embodiments of the device shown which are merely by way 'of illustration and not limitation as various and other forms of the device will, of course, be apparent to those skilled'in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A journal box having an integral lug with cam faces thereon, a member sleeved over said lug and having end portions bent around the respective ends of said lug and having an intermediate portion removably interlocked with said lug and sheathing said cam faces, bushing elements extending through openings in said end portions into a longitudinal opening in said lug, and means on said elements forinterlocking the same with said lug.

Wear means for a journal box lug, comprising a malleable sleeve element having a top web andspaced side webs depending therefrom, said top web being arranged at an acute angle with respect to one of said side websand at an obtuse angle with respect to the otherof .said side webs, said side webs having inwardly=bent portions at their lower eges', a hollow .capi portion at each end of said element integral :with the'adjacent ends of said webs, and a bushing member-at each end of said element having-a cylindrical portion extending longitudinally of saidelement through an opening in the adjacent cap portion, a flange at one end of said cylindrical portion ,for abutment with the external side of the related cap portion, and a malleable arm onsaid flange adapted to be bent aroundan associated lug for interlocking engagement therewith.

A journal box having an integral cam-faced lug with a pintle opening therethrough, a, jacket on said lug covering the cam faces thereon-and having disclike members abutting the opposite ends of said lug, bushing elements in the opposite ends of said opening and projecting throughrespective members for interlocking said. ;-jacket with said lug, and means on said bushing elements clamping portions of said lug for interlocking engagement therewith.
4. A wear element for a journal box lug, comprising a bushing portion with a, flange atone end, a, bendable fastening arm on the flange at one side of said bushing portion, and a bendable sheathing strip on said arm spaced from saidflange and extending transversely of said bushing portion. v

In a journal box, a lug thereon and having external cam faces anda pin opening therethrough, a wear element jacketing said lug and having a portion contoured to said faces and sheathing the same and having other portions abutting the ends of said lug, and means for interlocking said element with said lugcomprising bushing means in said opening interlocked with said other portions of said element.

In a journal box, a lug thereon having cam faces and a pin opening therethrough, detachable wear means on said lug comprising a member sheathing said cam faces and having end portions in abutment with respective ends of said lug, bushing means in said opening and interlocked with said portions, and fastening means on said bushing means hooked to said lug for preventing axial movement of said bushing means within said opening.

In a journal box, an integral lug thereon having cam faces and a pin opening therethrough, and wear means for said lug comprising a pair of elements detachably interlocked with the lug, each element comprising integral bushing and wear plate portions disposed respectively in said opening and on said cam faces.

In a journal box, the combination of an integral cam-faced lug thereon, wear means on said lug comprising a member sleeved on said lug, bushing elements projecting into an opening in said lug from the opposite ends thereof and interlocked with said member, and means on said bushing elements clamping portions of said lug, and interlocking said elements and member with said lug.

In a journal box, a lug with a pin opening therethrough, cam faces on said lug, wear means for said lug detachably mounted thereon and comprising a pair of similar elements arranged side by side longitudinally of said lug, each element including a bushing portion extending into the adjacent end of said opening, an arm portion connected to the bushing portion and wrapped around a part of said lug, and a wear plate portion connected to said arm andsuperposed onto. said faces in claspingv engagement with said lug. '10. A journal box wear elementblank comprising a cylindrical bushing portion, a, flange around said bushing portion, an arm on-said flange extending radially of said bushing portion, and a coplanar strip on said arm extending lon gitudinally transaxially of said bushing.

In a device of the class described, a journal box lug with a pin opening therethrough and comprisinga body portion with. cam faces thereon, anddetachable wear means interlocked with said lug comprising a sheathing covering said body portion and contoured to the facesthereon, and bushings connected to said sheathing and projecting into opposite ends of said opening.
12. In a journal box, a lug thereon'having a pintle opening therethrough and comprising shoulder portions at its ends and .an intermediate body portion with cam faces thereon, re-
movable lining means for protecting said faces and said opening against wear, comprising sheathing means and bushing means, said sheathing means embracing said bodyportion and .covering said faces, said bushing means extending into said opening and interlocking said sheathing means with the lug, and means for holding said bushing means against endwise movement in said opening interlocked with said shoulder portions and connected to respective bushing means. v

In a journalbox, in combination, 'an'integral lug thereon having cam faces and a pintle opening, and wearmeans detachably interlocked with said lug and comprising bushing and sheathing portions extending into said opening and jacketing said faces respectively said bushing portion interlocking said sheathing portions with the lug.
14. In a journal box, a lug having a section with cam faces thereon, a wear member at each end of said lug, each member having a portion wrapped around said section sheathing said faces, and a bushing portion extending into the adjacent end of a. pin opening through said lug.
15. A wear element for a journal box lug comprising spaced front and rear webs and an interconnecting diagonal top web arranged at an acute angle with respect to said front web, cam faces on said front and top webs, the lower edges of said front and rear webs being bent toward each other for gripping the underside of an associated journal box lug.
16. In a journal box, the combination of an integral cam-faced lug thereon, detachable wear means interlocked with said lug and comprising a jacket sheathing said cam faces, and bushings extending into a pin opening in said lug from the opposite ends thereof connected to the jacket for interlocking the jacket with the lug.

A journal box lug having an intermediate portion with cam faces, enlarged end portions and a pintle opening therethrough, the combination of wear means for said lug comprising sections wrapped around said intermediate portion and removably interlocked therewith and covering said faces and comprising other sections arranged-to interlock said first-mentioned sections with the lug and extending into the opening to provide bushing means therefor and interlocked with said end portions.
18. In an arrangement for protecting a journal box lug having cam faces intermediate its ends and a pintle opening therethrough, means having a portion covering said faces and removably interlocked therewith and having another portion connected to the first portion and extending into said opening to interlock said first portionwith said lug and affording a bushing for the opening. 19. In an arrangement for protecting a journal box lug, wear means comprising a sheath having a. portion covering said lug and having another portion holding said first portion on the lug and extending into a pintle opening in said lug to provide a bushing therefor.
20. A protective covering for cam faces and pintle opening of a journal box lug comprising sheathing means wrapped around the lug and covering said faces and extending into said opening to provide bushing means therefor and interlock the segments thereof covering said faces with said lug.
"-21. In a covering for cam faces of a journal 'boxlug recessed at its lower edges, a wear member'wrapped around said lug on said faces and having at least one of its lower edges bent into a'recess in the lug to fasten said member on the lug.
Y 22. In combination with a journal box lug having an enlarged upper portion with cam faces on the top and front sides thereof, a protective covering for the lug comprising a member wrapped around said lug to conform to said faces, and means detachably interlocking said member with the lug comprising at least one lower edge of said member bent under said enlarged portion. 23. Wear means for a cam-faced journal box lug comprising a one-piece wear member having a cylindrical bushing and a deformable piece connected to the bushing for bending around the lug to cover cam faces on the lug.
24. Wear means for a journal box lug having a pin opening and cam faces comprising a member having a portion at one end formed as a bushing for insertion into said opening and having another portion connected to the first-mentioned portion and adapted to be wrapped around said lug to cover said faces, said portions being formed and arranged to interlock each other with the lug to prevent accidental disassembiy thereof from the lug.
25. A wear member for a journal box lug comprising a blank with a bushing at one end and an arm extending from the bushing and having two angularly related bendable portions for wrapping around the lug.
26. A covering for a cam-faced journal box lug with an enlarged end portions comprising a member with an intermediate portion having angularly related sections conforming to the cam faces on the lug and having caps at the ends of the intermediate portion adapted to fit over said end portions.
