RAILWAY SIDE-FRAME AND JOURNAL-BOX CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1921.
Application filed September 3, 1920. Serial No. 407,831.
To all wiwm it may concern:
Be it known that I HARRY E. Donne, a citizen of the United tates, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Side-Frame and Journal-Box Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a railway side frame and journal box connection.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, reliable and fficient means for permitting the journal box to move guidedly in a vertical direction in the side frame pedestal jaws to accommodate the reception of shims .of different sizes between the side frame and box.
Another object is to provide a simple, relatively movable connection between the truck side frame and journal box adapted to meet the various requirements of service conditions.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of a truck side frame and journal box connected thereto in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken in the plane of line 2-42 of Fig. 1; and,
Figs. 3 and 4 are side and end elevations, respectively, of a shim which is insertible between the journal box and side frame.
It is common practice in compensating for wheel wear to build the side frame with a tie bar extending underneath the journal box and spaced therefrom by interposed removable shims. In the course of time the truck wheels wear to such an extent as to make truing necessary, which truing reduces the diameter of the wheels and would result in a lowering of the car coupler if provision were not made to compensate for such reduction. Usually one of the shims below the journal box is removed and then interposed between the top of the journal box and the truck pedestal. Then after another period of use the wheels are again trued and another shim is transferred from below the journal box to the top thereof. This arrangement requires that every truck be provided with ieust eight shims at the time the truck is built and applied to the car, which shims increase the weight of the truck, the cost thereof, and the weight to be pulled by the locomotive. I overcome these objectionable features by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein it will be noted that I have provided an integrally formed truck side frame 10 having depending pedestal jaws 11, each having spaced flanges 12 pro viding vertical guiding pockets 13 for the reception of laterally extending ears 14 of a journal box 15, said ears having elongated slots or openings 16 which register with openings 17 in the pedestal jaw flanges 1.2 and which registering openings 17 and elonga slots 16 receive fastening means which may take the form of bolts 18. From this arrangement it is apparent that both sides of the journal box may move guidedly in a vertical plane within the pedestal jaws 1]. for varying the distance between the top of the jornal box and the inner upper surface 19 between the pedestal a ws 11, whereby shims 20 of different thicknesses ma be iiiserted the1'ebetween in accordance with wear and truing of the truck wheels. in this instance the shims 20 are arcuate in shape and have upstanding flanges 21 which embrace oppo site sides of the side frame at the journal box receiving portion 19. By means of this arrangement a connection is formed between the truck "dc frame and journai box adapted to meet the various requirements for successful commercial use.
I claim:
1. In combination, in a railway car truck, a side frame having depending pedestal jaws each having an opening, a journal box having laterally extending ears with elongated slots therein to register with said other openings whereby both sides of the journal box may move guidedly in a vertical direction to accommodate the reception of a shim between the frame and the box, and securing means extending through said registering openings and slots and which when in position will permit relative vertical movement between the box and jaws.
2. In combination, in a railway car truck, aside frame having depending pedestal jaws each having spaced flanges for forming pockcts and said flanges having registering openings, a journal box having laterally extend ing ea rs provided with elongated openings in register with said other openings whereby both sides of the journaL box may move guidedly in said box between said flanges in a verti'c'a1 direction to accommodate thereceptioil of-"a shim between the frame and the boxya'ndsecuring means extending through said registering openings in said flanges and ears and which when in position will permit relative vertical movement between the box 10 and jaws. r
Signed at St. Louis Missouri, this 30th day of August, 1920. I
