In the drawings, the invention is shown in connection with a car having a bodyl of any suitable or desired construction comprising sills '2 composed of spacedZ-bars3 having their webs vertical and their upper flanges 4 not meet; Projecting between the members 3 of the sills 2 are pairs ofpedestals 10 which are, of greater width than the opening between flanges 8 and are received in openings I flanges 8.

while the attaching flanges 22 are braced and connected to the web 14 by the inwardly projecting ribs 26 andthe outwardly projecting ribs 28. The pedestal is further reinforced by a continuous rib which projects outwardly vfrom the center of the web 14 and extends from end to end thereof, being of uniform projection along the portion l8of the web and of gradually increasing projection from each end of the side portions 16 tothe region ofthe attaching flanges 22. 1
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7, the pedestal is formed with the web 14 of inverted U-shape having the side portions 16 and connecting portion 18 and provided with the flanges 20, 22 and 24 and ribs 26 and 28 as in Figs. 1 to 4, but in this construction the attaching flanges 22 are also joined by the parallel flanges 29 which extend along the edges of the connecting portion-18 and side portions 16 above the flanges22.
In use, the pedestals are placed with their upperportions projecting through the open- 'ings'121into the spacebetween the members 3, the flanges 22 engaging beneath the flanges 8 0i the' membersii and beingsecuredthereto boss or spring guide 44 formed integral with the web 14:. After the journal boxes 34 are in position in the pedestals, the flanges of the pedestals of each side of the car are connected by a tie bar 46 secured to the flanges 20 by bolts 48.
While the pedestal has been shown and described as an integral cast member, it is to be understood that it may be formed of a plubers having inwardly projecting flanges, and
a pedestal projecting between the members ofsaid sill and having oppositely disposed outwardly projecting flanges secured to theflanges of said sill members.
