Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HEDG- COCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Six-\Vheel Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to six wheel trucks for railway cars.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, relatively light but durable six wheel truck in which the load willbe evenly distributed.
Another object is to provide a simple and efiicient six wheel equalizing truck adapted to meet the various requirements under serv ice conditions.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which- -Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a six wheel truck embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a detached side elevation of the side frame equalizing bar;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of one of lo'the side frame members;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the assooiated side frame member on the same side of the truck;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken in the plane of line 6-6 of Figure 2; and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken in the plane of line 7--7 of Figure 2.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that my invention is illus trated in connection with a six wheel truck, each side frame of which includes two operatively associated side frame members 10 and 11 in longitudinal alignment. The side frame member 10 may be said to be a rigid side frame member and the side frame member 11 a trailing side frame member. The rigid'side frame member 10 has secured to it in any suitable manner an outer journal box '12 and an intermediate journal box 13.
The trailing side frame member 11 has socured to it in any suitable manner another outside journal box 14:. Each of the side frame members 10 and 11 has a bolster opening 15 in which suitable load carrying springs 16 are located, said springs being mounted upon spring seats 17 formed on said side frame members. Transverse bolster members 18 which restupon the springs 16 are guidedly supported within said bolster openings 15. Any suitable bolster may be used, but I prefer to use a three piece bolster such as that shown in the Lamont Patent No. 1,377,706, granted May 10, 1921, in which an equalizing bolster unit 19 has end girder members 20 rockably mounted upon the transverse bolster members 18. In this arrangement the truck center plate 21 is located directly over the middle axle 22, and the end axles 23 and 24 are spaced equal distances from the middle axle 22.
It will be noted that the side frame mem bers 10 and 11 are not directly connected to each other but are operatively connected to each other through, or by an equalizing beam 25. The ends of this equalizing beam rest on top of the rigid and trailing side frame members at points directly over the bolster members 18 or at points equidistant between the axles. The equalizing beam is secured against longitudinal displacement by upstanding lugs 26 which cooperate with shoulders 27 at the ends of said equalizing beam. Furthermore, said equalizing beam is secured against vertical displacement by bolts 28 which pass through registering openings in the side frame members 10 and 11 respectively and in the equalizing beam 25. Preferably the equalizing beam is of channel section so that at its ends it may overlap and inclose on three sides portions of the side frame members 10 and 11.
As stated, instead of the trailing side frame member 11 being directly connected to the side frame member 10, it is directly connected to the middle point of the equalizing beam 25. In this connection it will be seen that the trailing side frame member has a projecting arm 29 having an opening 30 which is made to register with openings 31 in the side flanges 32 of the equalizing beam for the reception of a bolt 33 which'serves as a connection between the trailing side frame member 11 and the equalizing beam 25.

Ina six wheel truck, the combination of a side frame including two associated side frame members, bolster members through which loads are transmitted to said side frame members, and an equalizing e10 beam connected to said side frame members oversaid bolster members and having a second connection to one of saidside frame members at an intermediate pointalong its length.
8. In a six wheel truck, the combination of a side frame including two associated sideframe members, and a load equalizing beam connected at points equidistant from side frame members andhaving a second connection with ime ofsaidside frame membersat a point 0,101 the vertical center line of said middle ax e whereby said side frame members are operatively connected and the load equalized.
9. In a six wheel truck, the combination of a side frame includinga uigidjide frame member, a trailing side frame memher, and a load equalizing beam connected to each of said side frame membcrs at oiuts equidistant from the middle axle am having a second connection with said trailing side frame member at a point above said middle axle for operatively connecting said side frame members and equalizingthe load.
10. In a siX wheel truck, the combination of a side frame including a rigid side frame member, a trailing side frame member having no direct connection to said rigid side frame member, bolster members located equal distances from the middle axle and through which a load is transferred to said side frame members, and an equalizing beam connected to each of said side frame members at points along the vertical centers of said bolster members, and a second connection to the trailing side frame member at a point in the vertical plane of said middle axle whereby said side frame members are operatively connected and the load equally distributed.
11. In a six wheel truck, the combination of a side frame including a plurality of associated side frame members, an equalizing member connecting said side frame members and having portions interengageable with said side frame members to take longitudinal shocks, the connection between said side frame members and equalizing member including a bolt operable in an elongated slot permitting said above mentioned interengageable portions to take the shocks.
12. In a six wheel truck, the combination of a plurality of longitudinally aligned side frame members having elongated slots therein and projections extending therefrom, and an equalizing member having means cooperating with said projections for taking longitudinal shocks transferred between said side frame members and equalizing member, pins connected to said equalizing member and passing through said elongated slots for connecting said side frame members and permitting said projections to take the shocks.
13. In a six wheel truck, the combination of a side frame including a plurality of associated side frame members, and an equalizing member connecting said side frame members, said equalizing member at its ends having curved seats for engaging said side frame members and permitting relative vertical movements therebetween.
14. In a six wheel truck, the combination of a side frame including a plurality of side frame members having no direct connection, and an equalizing member connected to said side frame members and forming a sole connection therebetween, said equalizing member having a channel section and embracing portions of both of said side frame members.
