ALLEN E. OSTRANDER, OF RIDGEWOOD. NEW' JERSEY, .AND HERBERT I-I. WILLIAMS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-HALF TO AMERICAN CAR AND FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY, AND ONE-HALF TO METROPOLITAN ENGINEERING COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW
YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW' YORK.
JOURNAL BOX.
Application filed March 23, 1921. Serial No. 454,761.
To @ZZ whomy it may concern.'
Be it known that ALLEN E. OsTRANDnn and HERBERT H. WILLrAifrs, residing at Ridgewood, county of Bergen, and State of New Jersey, and Brooklyn, county of Kings,-
and State of New York, respectively, and being' citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Journal Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, suc-h as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be un-w derstood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as 'it is obvious that various modiications thereof within the scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section through our improved journal box;
Figure 2 is partly a top plan view and partly a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3;
Figure 3 is partly a rear elevation and partly a vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2;
Figure 4L is a vertical section taken on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 2; and l Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
It is the object of our invention to provide an improved pressed metal journal box that shall be of great strength and durabil-l ity and can be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
In the embodiment of our invention shown in the drawings, the box comprises a top section 1 and a cellar section 2 which are welded together, as at 3. The sides 4 are provided with corrugations 5 which widen as they approach the bottom 6 of the box and extend across the bottom of the box forming a recess in which is seated the yoke 7 provided with openings to receive the journal box bolts.v The yoke 7 is provided with a recess adapted to receive the bottom 5 of the box so that stresses may he transr3 mitted from one to the other without danger of rupturlng the-welds 8 that secure the yoke 7 to the cellar section 2. At the top of the corrugations 5 the sides 4 are bent inwardly so as to forni stops for the journal brass. The top 9 of the top section 1 has a portion 10 bent upwardly leaving an opening 11 between the top 9 and the rear wall 12 into which the dust guard container 18 is fitted. The dust guard container 13 comprises a metal sheet flanged on all sides and shaped to fit the box. The dust guard is slipped into this receptacle and the whole forced into the opening l1.
Secured to the top 9 by welds 151. is an outer reenforcing member having a body portion 15 covering the top of the box and overlapping slightly at the sides. The re enforcing member is a drop forging or of cast steel and comprises, integral with the p ortion 15, downwardly extending projections 16 adapted to fitinto the corrugations 5 and to rcenforce those parts of the sides 4 that serve as stops for the journal brass. The outwardly extending portions 17 provided with openings to receive the journal box bolts, the hinge lugs 18 and the lugs 19 which project downwardly through openings in the top 9 to serve as stops for the journal box wedge are also formed integral with the body portion 15.
l/Vhat we claim is:
l. A journal box comprising a top section, having a top and sides, means in said top section adapted to serve as journal brass stops and a reenforcing means for said top adapted to rcenforce said stopping means.
2. A jouriial box comprising a top sec* tion having a top and sides, corrugations in said sides adapted to serve as journal brass stops and an outer reenforcing member for said top having portions reenforcing said corrugations.
3. A journal box comprising a top secu tion having a top and sides, means in said top section adapted to serve as journal brass stops and an outer member carried by said top and having means adapted to reenforce said stops and to receive the journal box bolts.
4l. A journal box comprising top and cellar sections, an outer reenforcing meniber secured to said' top section and serving as a yoke for the journal box bolts and a yoke for the bolts interlocking with said cellar section.
5. A journal box comprising a top section and an outer reenforcing member secured to said top section and having projections extending through openings in the top section and adapted to serve as stops for the journal box wedge.
6. A journal box comprisinga top section having corrugations adapted to serve as journal brass stops and an outer reeni'orcing member secured to said topl section and having formed integral therewith hinge lugs, lugs adapted to engage the journal b'ox wedge, lugs adapted to engage thejour'nal box bolts and lugs adapted to reenfore the eorr'ufrations in the top section.
7. journal box Comprising4 a top and sides having eorrugations adapted to serve as journal brass stops and an outer reenii'orcing member for said top having projections adapted to reenforce said stops and projections adapted to serve as stops for the journal box wedge.
8. A two part journal box comprising box like top and bottom sections welded together on their meeting edges and a reenforcing cover plate welded to said top section7 and interlocking with said top section.
9. A two part journal box comprising box like top andv bottom sections welded to gether on their meeting edges, a reenforcing Cover plate welded to said top section and having openings 'for the journal box bolts anda yokefor the journal box bolts interlocked with said cellar section. l0. A journal box comprisingy top .and cellar sections, an outer' reenforcing member interlocking with said top section and a yoke for the ournal box bolts interlocking with said cellar section. l
In witness whereof we havel hereunto set our hands in thepresence of two witnesses.
