JOURNAL Box. 1
, vented certain newand useful Improvements in a Journal Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the are to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood thatv the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof within the scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
1n said drawings 2' j Figure 1 is acentralvertical section of our improved journal box;
Figure 2 is in part a top plan view and in part a horizontal section of our improved journal box; 7
Figure 3 is in part elevation of the the box andin part a section on the line 3-4) of Fig. 2;
V and Figure 4.- is a section of one half of the box takenon the line 4 lot Fig. 2.
It is the object of our invention to provide an improved pressed metal journal box that shall be of great strength and durability and ran be manufactured atcomparatively small cost.
ln the drawing, 1 and 2 designate two pressings, each of which forms onehalf of the box. The two halves have the same contonrexc pt that they are inten-dedto form opposite halves of the box. Each halt comprises a side 3 and half of the top 4:, the
bottom 53 and the rear wall 6 oi"? the box. The rear wall (5 is separated from the top 4 so as to leave an opening 7 in whichthe dust guard container 8 is inserted. The sides 3 are corrugated, as at 9, the corrugation widening as it approaches the bottom 5 of the box and extending completely across the bottom. at the bottom the corrugation 9 Specificationof Letters Patent. forms a recess adapted to receive the lower yoke 10 which is provided with openings to receive the journal box bolts. The yoke 10 is alsorecesse'd to receive the box so that stresses are transmitted from one to the other without danger of rupturing the welds 1.1 that secure the yoke 10 to the box;
A reenforcing member 12, of cast steel or a drop forging,has formed integral therewith. projections 13' provided with openings adapted to receive the journal box bolts, projections 14 recessed to receive the corrugations in the box sides and adapted to form stops for the journal brass, projections 15 forming stops for the journal box wedge and hinge lugs 16. The pressings 1 and 2 are provided with openings 17 through which extend the projections 13, part of the metal cutaway to form the openings being bent outwardl which the pro ections 13 rest. The top 4 is also cut away, as at 19, to form an opening to receive the hinge .lugs 16.
The dust guard container 8 comprises a metal sheet flanged on all'sides and shaped to lit the box. The dustgguard is slipped into this receptacle and the whole forced into the opening 7. H
In assembling the box, the projections 13 on the reenforcing member. 12 are slipped into the openings 17, then the two pressings are brought together and welded along the center line 20 of the box, thereen'forcing to form shoulders 18 upon member 3 being in this way secured in, posiforcing member secured in place by said sec tions and having projections extending through openings, in said sections.
3. A journal box comprising a plurality of sections, a reenforcing member engaging said sections and held in position in said box upon securing said sections together.
