LOOSE-,LEAF-BINDER LOCK.

j These and other objects of the invention are accomplished by construction and combination of the various parts in the manner hereinafter described .and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

This loose-leaf binder comprises the usual oppositely disposed front cover 11 and rear cover 1,2 which in turn are joined together by a flexible back, as shown at 13. These covers 11 and 12, 'as well as the back 13, may be formed of paper, leather, or imitation leather, or any other suitable material of which such binders are made.

Vthe securing being also by means of rivets 21.v The metal strip 20 extends substantially throughout the length of -thelo'ose-leaf binder and is provided adjacent its ends with downwardly projecting lugs 22 which are preferably formed by pressing a portiony of the metal of the strip outwardly. f'
One of the essential features of my inven-v tion is the provision of a novel form of adjustable binder post which is made of three pieces and which, vwhen assembled, maybe adjusted from one extreme position to the other extreme position or from the position showny in Fig. y3 tothe position shown in Fig. 4. This novel binder post comprises a' threaded shank 22, of which there areA two in number, secured to the metal strip 18, by having the head thereof riveted in a tapered aperture, as shown at 23. Mounted in threaded lengagement with the threaded shank 22 ris a sleeve 24 Awhich is provided adjacent its lower end with a threaded portion 25.l .In order to secure thesleeve 24 from disengagement with the shank v25, after the sleeve is mounted on the shank, I upset the upper end of the shank, asl shown at 26,- so that when the sleeve reaches the upper end of the shank, or the position shown in Fig. 4, the sleeve is prevented from disengagement with the shank.

' Formed integrally with and extending upwardly from AtheV extension member 27 is a cylindrical projection 29 which is preferably provided with a transverse slot, as shown vat 30, on one side thereof. This slot4 30 is adapted to engage the locking member in a manner hereinafter described. The strip 20 is provided with apertures as shown at 20 for the reception of projections 29 of the binder posts 24. The locking member 31 is guided in its transverse movement on the strip 20 by having its opposite ends provided with spaced apart extensions 33 and 34D respectively. These spaced-apart extensions are bent downwardly and inwardly so as to embrace the opposite ends of the metal strip 2O as shown at 35. The extensions 34 on the opposite ends of the locking member 3l are adapted to engage the lugs 22 formed on the opposite ends ot the metal strips 2O for limiting the transverse movement of the loclfing member with respect to the strip 2O and prevents its displacement therefrom.v The locking member 31 is provided with transverse slots asshown at 3G so as to accent modate the heads oic the rivets 2l, in the transverse movement of the locking member 51. The locking member is provided with spaced-apart locking slots generally referred to by the character 37. These slots 37 are provided with a substantially transverse straight edge 38 which engages the periphery of the projection 29 on the outer side of each. The other or inner edge of each of the locking slots 37 is provided with a transverse straight edge 39 adjacent the inner edge of the slot and also a curved portion as shown at e0 adjacent the outer edge of the slot. This transverse edge ot' the locking slots 37 is adapted to engage the transverse groove 30 formed in the eXtension 29 for locking the locking member to the binder posts.
From this construction, it will be readily seen that when the locking member is moved transversely on the metal strip 2O to a posit-ion in which the extensions 34E engage the lugs 22, the edges 39 ot the locking slots 37 will be disengaged from the grooves 30 of the binding posts and thereby permit the metal strip 20 to be disengaged from the binder posts so that the loose leaves may be removed or replaced.
In the modified torm'shown in Fig. 5, the locking member 3l"l is adapted to be moved in a direction reverse trom that shown in Fig. l and is prevented from disengagement with the metal strip 20, by havingtrans verse slots 41 formed in' the opposite ends thereof. Mounted in the transverse slots and secured to the metal strip 2O are rivets l2 which are provided with enlarged heads so as to prevent displacement ot the locking member from the metal strip. however, are sufiiciently spaced from the metal strip as to permit the locking member to move with respect to the metal strip under a slight pressure. The binder posts t3 in this modified form, are provided with peripheral grooves 44 adjacent their upper These rivets ends and are adapted to receive the U- shaped edges 45 formed in the locking member 8la for securing the locking member to the binder posts.
While in the above specification I have described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice,it will, ot course, be understood that the same is capable of modification and that modification may be employed` without departing from the spirit and scope oir the invention as eX-l binder cover, binder posts secured to one ot said strips, the second strip being adapted to engage said binder posts, and means en gageable with and movable transversely on said second-named strip for locking said loose-leaf binder. I

In combination with a loose-leaf binder cover,'a pair ot strips secured tothe said binder cover, binder -posts secured to one of said strips, the second strip being adapted to engage said binder posts, and a locking member movable transversely on said second-named strip for locking said loose-leaf binder.
4. In combination with a loose-leafvbinder cover, a pair of strips secured to said binder cover adjacent to the front and rear cover members, binder posts secured to one of said strips and adapted to be engaged with the other of said strips,'andk means movable transversely on said last-named strip for locking said loose-leaf binder.
5. In combination with a loose-leafbinder cover, iaps formed integrally. with said binder cover and positioned adjacent the front and rear cover members thereof, metal strips secured to said flaps, binder posts secured to one of said metal strips, there being apertures in the other of said strips adapted to receive said posts, means transversely movable on said last-named strip for engaging said posts tor locking said posts to said strip, `and means formed on said lastnamed strip for guiding said irst-named means inits movement on said strip.
6. In combination with a loose-leaf binder cover, metal strips secured adjacent the front and rear cover members thereof, two spaced-apart adjustable binder posts secured to one ot said strips, each osaid binder posts having a transverse recess formed on one side izo thereof, the other of said metal strips having apertures therein for receiving said binder posts, a locking member having transversey slots therein on said other strip and adapted to move transversely With respect thereto whereby the edges vof said transverse slots engage the recesses in said binder` posts for locking said loose-leaf binder.

In combination With a loose-leaf binder cover, comprising` front and rear cover members, metal strips secured to said cover adjacent said iront and rear cover members, adjustable binder posts comprising threaded shanks secured to one of said strips, a sleeve having a threaded portion engageable with said threaded shanks, an extension secured to said sleeve having a transverse slot formed on one side thereof, the metal strip4 secured adjacent said front cover having apertures adapted to receive the extensions of said ybinder posts, a locking member mounted on the metal strip adjacent said liront cover and movable transversely With respect to said strip and engageable With said extensions for locking said loose-leaf binder. p
8. In combination with a loose-leaf binder ing upset to prevent displacement of said sleeve with respect to said shank, an eXtension having a transverse slot on one side thereof secured to the upper end of said sleeve, there being apertures in the other of saidmetal strips adapted to receive the eX- tension of said binder post, and a transversely movable locking member mounted on said other strip and adapted to engage the recesses formed in the extensions of said binderv posts for locking said loose-leafA binder.
