IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.

' To all whom t may concern:
Vuseful Improvement in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby decla-re the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufiicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view there-l of. Fig. 3 is a top view of the body of the box. Figs. 4. and 5 are top views of the lid thereof.

My invention relates to an open box 5 and consists of alid having on its borders scallops or tongues, which enga-ge with inwardlyprojecting rims on opposite sides of the opening of the box.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a box, whosebody B may be constructed of paper or pasteboard. C represents rims, which project inwardly from the outer edges of opposite sides of the opening of the box, so as to overhang the body thereof, and are adapted for engagement of the lid D, which consists of a strip having on oppositel borders a series of scallops, y serrations, or tongues, El, and of width corresponding to the opening of the box which it is to cover.
When'the lid is to be fitted to the box one end thereof is so presented to the rims C that the lineof the tongues will extend at right angle to that ot' the rims C. Now slide the lid to the opposite end of the box, and, in the passage, bend the lid Vor impart undulating motions thereto, so that the tongues will alternately rest above and below the rims. This operation acts, as it were, after the manner of weaving or reeving, and causes the lid to be irmly connected to the body of the box. y
In order to remove the lid, itis only necessary to slide it from its position, the tongues otferin g no resistance thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lid D, formed with tongues E, which lock with inwardlyprojecting rims of the body of the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
