Application filed January My invention relates to a safety device for calenders and more particularly to a guard to prevent the hands of the operators from being caught in the bight of the calender rolls.

Referring to the drawings I show a threeroll calender having side frames 1 and 2 and rolls 3, 4, and 5. i k-cording to one conventicnal operation a bank of rubber 6 is sheeted out on roll 4-, cut into strips on said roll, if desired, and taken off onto a liner 7 passed between rolls i: and The safety device is indicated generally at 10 and comprises a plate 11 riveted or otherwise secured at its ends to members 12, and rollers 13 and 1st journaled respective y in bearings 15 and 16 formed in members 12. At the rear of the plate and secured thereto 1 provide a curved plate 16 spaced from roll 4: and extending inwardly to a pointadjacent the night of the rolls f and The safety de' vice is suspended before the calender rolls in any suitable manner as by arms 17 secured to members 12 at 18 and mounted to swing on rod 19 secured to the side frames of the calender. The device is yieldingly held in position by springs 2t) secured to the members 12 and to bolts or lugs 531 set in the side frames 1 and 2. A handle bar is secured at its ends to members 12 for convenicncc in swinging the device outwardly when feeding the liner to the calender. In the latter operation it s only necessary to insert the liner beneath roll let when the rotation of the roll 5 will carry it between and through the calender rolls. Curved. plate 16 prevents the hand of an operator coming in contact with more than one roll if for any reason he inserts his hand behind the guard, and it also serves to prevent premature contact of the liner with the rubber on roll 4.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the specific calendering operation described, for instance the liner may be fed over roll 18 instead of under a section on line 2-2 of Fig- .9, 1925. Serial No. 1,446.

Having described one invention 1 claim: v
1. In a calender a plate suspended before the calender rolls and adapted to bridge the big-ht of said rolls, and antifriction devices on the longitudinal edges ofthe plate.
2. In a calender a plate suspended before the calender rolls adapted to bridge the bight of said rolls and means to maintain the plate inclose proximity to the calender rolls said last named means being yieldable to permit access to said rolls.
3. In a calender a plate positioned to bridge the bight of the calender rolls and anti-friction devices on the longitudinal edges of the plate.
4:. In a calender a plate yieldingly mounted to bridge the bight of the calender rolls and freely rotatable rolls mounted on the longitudinal edges of the plate.
5. In a calender a plate yieldingly mounted to bridge the bight of the calender rolls, and a member extending inwardly from. the plat to a point adjacent the bight ofthe rolls.
(3. In a calender a plate positioned to bridge the bight of the calender rolls and a member conforming substantially to the curvature of the rolls secured to the plate and extending to a. point-adjacent the bight of the rolls.
T. In a calender a plate mounted to bridge the bight of the calender rolls, anti-friction devices on the longitudinal edges of the plate embodiment of my and a member extending inwardly from the plate to a point adjacent the bight of the rolls.
8. In a calender a plate yieldingly mounted to bridge the bight of the calender rolls, freely rotatable rolls mounted on the longitudinal edges of the plate and a member ex tending inwardly from the plateto a point adjacent the bight of the rolls.
