ATENT 4E1 ERNES L, 'rnron, or nnw'ianrrn n, oonnnorronw, tassisnon To TKE' nM-nnronn 1 A owner; GQBPOEA'IIQH; or new BRITAIN, connno'rrour, A CQBIfOB-ATIQN*9F c nnect on Application filed; November Myinyent-ion relates to impnovements in door-closers and has for its object to provide L new and improved, door closer having a spring casing provided with a combined stop and; hold-back which will limit the opening movement ofth-e door and; also hold the door open at the desired point.
Heretofore it has been customary toprovidedoors with stops. independent of the door closer: casing; which will limit the opening movement of the door at the desired point. in my invention such stop is embodied in the casingof the closer itsel f and also acts to hold the doorfrom closing;
The following is adescription of an embodiment .ot my invention, reference being had toithe accompany ngdrawings, n whic Fig. 1 shows. aplan View of a door check and closer mounted on, a, left-hand door, parts being broken awayand the doorbeing shown in closed, position 7 Fig. 2-shows the relat on of h p w n the door is open to 90 degrees;
Fig. 3, is an enlarged view, partlyv in section and partly in} side elevatiomthe section being on the line 3;3, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 s a de ail; of an: adinsthb ring which I use in, carrying out my invention; and
Fig. 5 is a detail of; a earn which when assembled coroperates with such adjustable ring.
Rotor-ring more particularly to the drawings, 2 indicates the frame of a left-hand door .4, which.1. 0 when t s opened wings in the direction of the arrow. 6 is an ordinary hydraulic doo che k: an v cl r, ith
the usual lever 8, connected the adjusta le ink 1 o thevdoor 24$ an djustabl ring which y the l4 whfh ped in anydesired pos t on upen h cap 16-, of the check. This cap 16; has, a bearing 18- Which is surro d d: y a c m 20, the bea g be ng zencent ih wi h h usual spring driven shaft 21;, to the lever is: connected, The periphery 22 of a flange over-rides the upper portion of the ring 12 so as to cover the space between the cam and the ring 12. The cam is eccentric to the bearing 18 and consequently to the periphery '22 and is connected to the lever arm 8 by a pin 24 which engages the hole 26. This 24 passes through a boss 28 on which mounted the usual spring sion detest 305 .DOOR CLOSER.
19 5,, S rial n me t.
VVit-h the construction shown, it will v seen that the cam 20 rnoves with the arm 8 so as to be partially revolved asth el is opened and closed, The ring 12 is provided with an inward projection. 32 whichgas h h P n 401 th a 2, mov s' or ward or away from it, is engaged or disen eas bythe h ns s hshc in h r 32 so that the opening; movement of the door is checked, and, fuiithe mor, the wedging action which takes place between the projection 32- and the cam 20islsuchr that the door is held open. against the closing aetion of the spring of the. check. When it is desired to close the door thus held, open it is only necessary to use sufiicient closing force to withdraw the can 20 froni the" pro;- ]ect1on 32, whereupon the doorwill close under the normal. action of the closing spring.

The cap 16 is held from rotation relatively to the spring casing 36 in the usual manner by a pin 42 entering a hole the projection 44 integral with said cap v Bythe foregoin simple means a step and hold=baek are embodied a integral parts thereof, with very little additional expense, and of efficient durable construction which is not liable to get out of order.
If it is desired to adjust the check so that the door shall not be stopped. or held back when opened this can be done by simply adjusting the ring 12 so that the cam will not engage the projection 32 in any position of the door,.or by removing the pin 24L.
, By eccentric cam I mean a cam whose engaging surface is not concentric with the axis of the actuating shaft, but so shaped that when turned it makes a wedging engagement with the stop 32. The surface of this cam 20 is shown as circular, but while that shape is desirable for manufacturing reasons, the wedging action can be secured with other shaped cams.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modificationswithoutdeparting from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat I claim is:
1. In a spring door closer,the combination of a rotatable lever, a cam revolving therewith and having a surface eccentric to the axis thereof, a spring casing and a stationary stop carried by said casing and adapted to be engaged and disengaged by the eccentric surface of said cam during the opening and closing movements of the door, saidcasing having means for securing it directlyto the door to be controlled, and a spring driven shaft protruding from said spring casing, the axis of said cam being concentric with said spring driven shaft.
2.'In a spring door closer, the combination of a rotatable lever, a cam revolving therewith and having a surface eccentric to the axis thereof, a spring casing and a stationary stop carried by said casing and adapted to be engaged and disengaged by the eccentric surface of said cam during the opening and closing movements of the door, said stop being angularly adjustable, said casing having means for securing it directly to the door to be controlled, and a spring driven shaft protruding from said spring casing, the axis of said cam being concentric with said spring driven shaft.
' '3. In a spring door closer, the combination of a rotatable lever, a cam revolving therewith and having a surface eccentric to the axis thereof, and a stationary stop adapted to be engaged and disengaged by the eccentric'surface of said cam during the opening and closing movements of the door, said stop being angularly adjustable, said lever and cam being provided one with a pin and the other with an opening receiving said pin so that said cam revolves with said lever.
4:. In a spring door closer, the combination of a rotatable lever, a cam revolving therewith and having a surface eccentric to the axis thereof, a stationary stop adapted to be engaged and disengaged by the eccentric surface of said cam during the opening and closing movements of the door, said stop being angularly adjustable, said cam being provided with an opening, and said lever being provided with a removable pin entering said opening, and a screw-plug holding said pin in position so that said cam and lever move together. i
5. In a spring door closer, the combination of a shaft, a lever secured thereto, a
spring casing, a cover therefor surrounding said shaft and having an external bearing concentric with said shaft, a cam revolvably externally mounted on said bearing and having a surface eccentric thereto, means connecting said cam and'lever, and a fixed stop carried bysaid casing cover and adapted to be engaged by the eccentric surface of said cam and disengaged thereby as the door opens and closes, said casing havlng means for securingit directly to the door'to be controlled, and a spring driven shaft protruding from said spring casing, the axis of said cam being concentric with said spring driven shaft.
6. In a spring door closer, the combination of a shaft, a lever secured thereto, a spring casing, a cover therefor surrounding said shaft and having an external'bearing concentric with said shaft, a cam revolvably externally mounted on said bearing and having a surface eccentric thereto,n1eans connecting said cam and lever, a fixed stop carried by said casing cover and adapted to be engaged by the eccentric surface 'of said cam and disengaged thereby as the door opens and closes, said cam havingja laterally extending flange 'overlapping said fixed stop.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 23rd day of November, 1926.
