PA 1" E GHABJLES A. SCHMIT'I', OF ANACONDA, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IOURTHTO JOHN E EASTMAN, JR., OF ANACONDA, MONTANA.
LOCK FOR SLIDING" DOORS.
Application filed December 23', 1922; Serial No. 608,697.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SGHMITT,
a citizen of the United States,. residing at Anaconda. in the county of Deer-lodge and 5 State of Montana, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements inaLocks for Sliding Doors, of which the following 1858, specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in. looks for sliding doors and more particularly to a lock for use with the sliding doors of freight. cars.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of.v thisvcharacter which may be readily attachedto a freight car. and which isso. constructed that the door may be closedwithout locking the lock whenever so desired" I A further object of the invention is to provide a lock for sliding doors having a manually slidable bolt which when in Withdrawn position is out of engagement with the locking part proper sothatthe door may 25 be closed when desired without locking the same.
A still further object of the invention is toprovide alock having means whereby a seal may be applied to the door when so desired. which seal may be broken without unlocking the lock.
These and: other: objects I attain by the construotionand arrangement shown in the accompanying; drawings wherein for the adapted for attachment either to the door 11 or body 1201: the car; i The plate has-formed thereon an outstanding flange 13 substantially rectangularin form and one side wall of which coincides or practically coincides with one edge of the plate 10. The flange at this side wall thereof is cut away, as indicated at 14, to afford. a space through which, as hereinafter more fully will appear,
time
the bolt is entered. The plate 10 has formed therein a pair of sockets 15 and 16 which align with similar sockets 17 and 18 formed ina cover plate 19, which cover plate is attached to the flanges by riveting; as indicated. at 20,- and combines with the plate 10 and flange 13" to form a housing'to which access is had through the opening or space 14 formed in the flange The numeral 21 designates a' latch member. comprising a bar having formed upon one end thereof lugs 22- for engageme-ntin the openings 16 and 18 of the plates 10 and 19 respectively, and upon the opposite end with a shoulder 23for a purpose presently to appear. The numeral 24 designates a rotat'a-ble key operated part which is rotatably mounted in the sockets 15 and 17 of the plates 10 and. 19 and which has formed therein a bore within which are located key engaging ports 26. This'bore aligns with an opening 27 formed th-ro-ugh the plate 19 at the base of the socket and through which an i operating key'28 for coaction with the look ing parts may be-inserted; The locking part 24 has secured thereto alever arm 29 which is provided. with a flat angular extension 30 sospaced thatwhen' the loc-kingpart is in the locking'position it engages flatly against theflange 13st its inner face. The freeend ofsthrs angular arm 301s connected by alink 31 with the latch'member 21 so that upon" rotation of the locking part, the latch may be swung to move the shoulder 23" thereof out of alignment with the opening formed at 14. The latch bar- 21 is normally held" with the shoulder 25 thereof in alignment with thisopeni'ng' by means oi. aspring 32 secured. at one end to: the. inner 'faceof the flange 13 and bearing at its: opposite end face to which it is applied in any desired manner, being preferably secured as by riveting at and has attacherv thereto a member 34 provided with an apertured car 35. The member 34: is preferably secured thereto by means of rivets extending through the member and plate and forms one receiving member of a pair adapted for the reception of a seal tape or wire. Secured to the body or door as the case may be, is a locking bar plate 36, and this plate bears a second member 34 similar in construction to and coacting with the member 34L of the plate 10 when the door is in the closed position for the reception of the tape.
The numeral 37 designates a locking bar embodying a head 38' of a size to permit its entrance through the opening 14 into the casing hereinbefore described, and having a notch 39 in which the shoulder 23 engages. The bar 37 further includes a body portion 40 which is longitudinally slotted and which is separated from the head by an enlarged portion 41 limiting the entrance of the head 38 into the casing. Formed centrally of the plate 36 is an opening through which is directed a reduced extension 42 of a guide member 43 extending through the slot of the body 40 and having a head as overhanging the face of the member 40 at the sides of the slot and preventing separation of the body from the plate 36. This extension is riveted upon the under side of the plate 36 to hold the member firmly in position.
- Further guide members are provided. as
indicated at 45, each comprising a substantially L-shaped member having an extension 46 directed through openings formed in the plate at the sides of the body portion 40 and riveted upon the under side of the plate. The angle portions of the Us overlie the upper face of the body 40 and abut the side faces thereof, thereby preventing either transverse displacement or vertical displacement of this body. As shown in the drawings, the guides 45 are arranged in pairs and limit the movement of the locking bar 37 in opposite directions, the movement being limited in one direction by engagement of one pair of members 45 with the enlargement 41 between the head 38 and body to and in the opposite direction by outstanding shoulders 47 formed upon the opposite extremity of the body. The body 40 has secured thereto an outstanding member 48 adapted to be engaged by the hand for shifting the same.
In the operation of my device whenthe door is closed the seal may be placed through the apertured ears of the members 34 and the door left unlocked if so desired. When it is desired to lock the door, this may be accomplished by shifting the locking bar 37 to move the head 38 thereof into the casing Where the shoulder 23 will engage in the i is desired to close the door at intervals and is unnecessary to lock the same.
Many changes being possible in the construction of the lock as hereinbefore set forth without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In a lock of the type described, a casing having an opening afiording access thereto, opposed walls of the casing having formed therein aligned sockets, a lever provided at one end upon opposite sides thereof with hub portions adapted to engage in said sockets and provided upon its free end with a locking bar engaging shoulder, a spring normally urging the free end of said lever in one direction, a rotatable locking part, a lever carried by the locking part and having a. portion fiatly engaging a side wall of the casing to limit the rotation thereof in one direction, and a link pivoted to the lever of the locking part and to the first named lever.
2. In a device of the type described a.
casing having an opening affording access thereto through which a locking bar may he introduced to the casing, the locking bar having a notch, pairs of aligned sockets formed in'opposed walls of the casing,'a lever provided at one end upon opposite sides thereof with lugs rotatably engaging in one pair of said sockets, the free end of the leverbeing provided with a shoulder adapted to engage the notch of the locking bar, a spring urging said free end toward the locking bar to maintain said shoulder in engagement in said notch, a rotatable locking part mounted in the remaining pair of sockets, a lever secured to the locking part and having an angular portion flatly abutting one side wall of the casing when said shoulder is engaged in said notch, and a link pivoted to the first named lever.
3. In combination, a locking bar having a body portion provided at opposite ends thereof with enlargements forming stops and upon one end with a locking head adapted for engagement with a lock, a plate, pairs of L-shaped guide members attached to said plate and each having one portion thereof slidably embracing the sidehof the body of the locking bar and a second ,pored upon the opposite side of the plate from tion thereof slidably embracing the face the locking bar. 7 10 of the locking bar remote from the plate, In testlmony whereof I hereunto afiix the body of said locking bar being provided my signature.
5 with a slot, a headed member directed CHARLES A. SCI-IMITTQ through the slot of the locking bar and the Witnesses:
plate and slidably abutting the upper face JOHN W. JAMES, of the locking bar, said member being ri'vet- HUGO GALLE.
