f F., R. BODNAR WINDOW SASH LOCK Filed April l, 1922 Patented May L 1923.
rarer err FRANK R. BODNAR, OF BBIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
WINDOW-seen Loon.
Application filed April 1, 1922. Serial No. 548,621.
citizen ofthe United Abtates, and a resident y ot' Bridgeport, in the county of F airfield and State ot Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVindow-Sash Locks, -oi which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains 'to a small and simple device tor ready attachment to a window sash tor locking together two slid-- ing sashes to prevent their unauthorized opening :trom the outside of the window.
The object ot this invention is to provide a device ot this character that can be readily attached to anywindow sash rail, and without tools, and which can be swung to engaging position with the other sash, and` also locked in such position it desired, and which can be swung back to an inoperative position.
A further object of the invention is to providein a device of this character a base member and lever member, and which lever member is provided with a cam member for engagement with the window sash.
A further object of the invention is to provide in connection with said device, locking means between the lever and base member to hold the lever member in the locking position. Y
In the accompanying drawing showing one embodiment of the'present invention, Fig. 1 shows the device in locking position on a window sash.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same being in section through the window sash.
Fig. 3 shows the several parts in separated position, ready Jfor assembling.
The device comprises essentially a base plate, a lever plate hinged to the base plate, and a cam rotatable on the tree end ot the lever plate.
As shown in the drawing I provide a base plate 1, having a bent ear 2, on one end to form a hinge. A lever plate 8 is provided with bent ears 4, 4, at one end between which the bent ear 2 is inserted, and the two members hinged together by means of a pin 8.
The base member is also provided with sev-- eral prongs 14 that may be integral pointed ears extending downwardly by means of which this plate can be readily attached to the sash rail 15 of the window, by merely using a few hammer blows, This base plate is also shown provided with an integral arm suitably apertured, that will project through a slot 12 in the lever plate 3, and a cotter pin 13 passed through the apertured ear will act to prevent swinging movement of the plate 3 away from the plate 11 as indicated in Fig.`2. x
0n the further end of the lever plate 3 are ears 5, 5, separated by a slot 16. These ears 5 receive a. pin 7 on which a cam member 6 is rotatable in the slot 16, as indicated in Fig. 2. This cani is provided with a tooth portion 9, and an enlarged or cani portion. 10 whose ends form prongs 17, 18. The tooth portion can swing in the slot` 16, but the larger portion 10 will strike the plate or the end oi` the slot and prevent turning ot' the cam, .trom the position shown in Fig. 2.
In the use of the device, the base plate 1 is placed on'the sash rail'l, and the prongs 14 are driven in to securely hold the base plate on the sash rail, see Fig. 2, during which operation the lever plate 3 is swung forward away from the upper sash. Then this plate is swung over against the other sash and will engage the side rail 19 by the tooth portion 9. The two sashes are shown in the closed position, and it the lower sash is raised or the upper sash is lowered as indicated in Fig. 1, the cam will be rotated and bring the portion 10 against the rail 19 that will lock it in this position and prevent further sepa-ration ci the sashes in this direction. It desired, the cotter pin 18 can now be placed through the apertured ear 11 that will lock the lever plate in this position until it is again desired to loosen the two sashes. When one of the sashes are turned to their former position the cam willfbe rotated in the opposite direction, and the cotter pin being withdrawn will tree the sashes.
A device or" this kind is comparatively simple and cheap to manufacture and easy to attach and operate.
What I claim is:
1. A window lock comprising a base plate having attaching means, a lever plate hinged to one end of the base plate, and a cam wheel eccentrically pivoted on the free end of the lever plate with its axis parallel with the lever axis.
2. A window lock comprising a base plate having attaching means, a lever plate hinged to one one of the base plate, and a cam wheel pivoted on the free end of the lever plate with its axis parallel with the lever axis', the said two plates having locking means comprising an aperturedv ear on one rplate adapted to project through a slot in the other plate, and a key or fastener proj ecting through said apertured ear.
3. A Window lock comprising a base plate having attaching nneans,` a lever plate hinged to one end ofthe hase plate, a cani LWheel pivoted on the free end ofthe lever 'plate with its axis parallel With theV lever axis, said cano wheel having 'a portion of itS periphery provided with teeth. and a cani portion of greaterlradius than the tooth portion. ,1
..AWindovv' loclr comprising a base plate having attaching means, hingedto one end ot the hase plate, and a cain Wheel pivoted on the iree end of the lever plateivith'ite axis parallel With the lever. airis, the said lever plate having a slot, an apertured integral ear on the haseplate adapted'to project through a slot yin the other' plate, and a .keyv or fastener* projecting through said apertured ear.v
5. A Window lock comprising a hase plate having attaching means,` a leverl f plate hinged to one 'end of the base plate, 4and 'a cam Wheel pivotedl onthe free end of the a' vlever plate lever plate with its axisl parallel 'Withthe lever axis, the lever plate having a slot at its free enclin which the cam Wheel turns.
6. A Window lock comprising a hase plate havingfr attachingy means,` a lever plate hinged toone end of the loase plate, a cam vWheel pivoted on the iree end of the leverV plate vWith its airis`vl parallel With the lever axis, said cani Wheel having a portion 'of its periphery provided with teeth and a cani portion of greater lradius than the tooth f portion, the lever plate having a slot at its free end in Which the cam Wheel turns, and
v which 'forms astop for the eamfportion heyond the teeth. y Y
A Window lock comprising a'base plate having attaching means, a lever plate hinged to one end` of the base plate, va 'cam Wheel pivoted on the ilreeend of the lever plate with its axis parallel with the lever axis, said cain Wheel having a portionot` its periphery provided with teeth and a cam portionv of greater radius than the tooth portion, one end oiv/hich is i gage the Window. n f Y.
