To all whom 2'1.- may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. Vororrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Controlling Means, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sliding doors of the type wherein a movable arm is carried by the door and is operatively connected with a power closing mechanism which normally tends to move said arm in a direction to move the sliding door to closed position, suitable operating means being provided for moving said arm to move the door to opened position.
The present invention aims to provide means for blocking the operation of the closing mechanism so that the door may be locked in opened position. This and other advantages are described in detail in the following specification and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part thereof and showing a preferable embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings: Figure 1 is a View in elevation of the sliding door of an ele ator well equipped with door closing mechanism of the character described, and provided with my blocking device operating in conjunction therewith. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the closer cylinder with one form of blocking device mounted thereon and in operative blocking position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the blocking device in inoperative position; Fig. 4; is a fragmentary View in elevation of the door controlling parth nnd closing mechanism in door opened pbsition. 'Fig. 5 is a top plan view of\the closer cylinder showing the blocking device'applied thereto. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the friction clamp. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the actuatin cam therefor. Fig. 8 is a view in elevation illustrating a modified form of blocking device. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary view in elevation with the door controlling parts in door opened position and'themodi- -fied form of blocking device in operative blocking position. Fig. 10 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a detail in front and edge elevation of the blocking plate.
Referring to the drawings by numeralsr 1 indicates the sliding door of an elevator well and 2 the casing thereof.
3 designates a lever arm pivotally mounted at its forward end upon the forward edge of the door 1 and having its rear end pivotally connected to a second lever arm 4, which in turn is pivotally carried at its rear end by a bracket 5', which bracket is secured to the casing of the elevator door which forms an abutment stationary relatively to the dooi'g The lever arm 4 adjacent its bracket-pivoted 5nd is provided With "a transverse extension 6 to which is journaled a piston rod'7 of a closer cylinder 8, which cylinder maybe of the type employing a coiled spring acting against the head of the piston rod 7 and normally tending to pull the lever arm 4 downwardly and through said arm and lever arm 3, move the sliding door 1 to closed position. The forward end of the lever arm 3 is pivotally mounted on a plate 9 fixedly carried on the forward edge of the sliding door. In, order to open the door against the force of the closing mechanism, an operating lever 10 is provided pivotally mounted at its upper end upon the door. An operating arm 11 is likewise pivotally mounted at its upper end upon the door and is provided with a curved slot 12 therein in WhlCh rides a pin 13 carried by the lever arm 3 adjacent its forward pivoted end, this curved slot 12 having the function of a cam. The operating handle 10 has projecting from its under face a stud 14 which, when the door is in closed position, rests againstthe forward edge of the arm 11. When it is desired to open the door, the handle 10 is moved to the right from the position shown in Fig. 1, thls movement, through it's stud l4, lifting the arm 11, and through its cam slot 12,, raising the lever members 3 and 4 and starting the door on its opening movement. The length of the plate 24 is, of course, figured to brm its eccentric or cam edge into frictiona blocking contact with the upper face of the closercylinder when the lever arm 4 and its transverse extension 6 have been moved to door opened position. By forming the contact or blocking edge of the blockin 24 eccentrically to its pivot, I am ena led to allow for any slight variation in the door opening movement of the lever arm4, and its transverse extension, the eccentric edge of the blocking plate formin a sort of compensating means. The blocking plate, as before stated, is secured to the upper edge of the lever arm 4 by means of its clip 26, when not in use. In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, a relatively stationary abutment, a movable arm carried by said door operatively connected with said abutment to move with the opening-and closing of the door, closing mechanism for said door embodying a power cylinder and a piston rod therein operatively connected with said movable arm to move the same in a directionto move said door to closed position, operating means for moving said door to open position, and manually operable means for locking said piston rod against door closing movement.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, a relatively stationary abutment, a movable arm carried by said door operatively connected with said abutment to move wit-h the opening and closing of the door, closing mechanis1n,-for said door embodying a power cylinder and a piston rod therein operatively connected with said movable arm to move the same in a direction to move said door to closed position, operating means for moving said door to open position, and manually operable means for looking said piston rod against movement, said means including a cam member cotSpera-ting with said cylinder and piston rod,

In a device of the character described, in combination, a sliding door, a relatively stationary abutment, a movable arm carried by said door operatively connected with said abutment to move with the opening and closing of the door, closing mechanism for said door embodying a power cylinder and 'a piston rod therein operatively connected with said movable arm to move the same in a direction to move said door to closed position, operating means for moving said door to open position, and manually controlled means adapted to engage and frictionallyhold said piston rod against movement.

In a device ofthe character described, in combination, a sliding door, a relatively stationary abutment, a movable arm carried by said door operatively connected with said abutment to move with the opening and closing of the door, closing mechanism for said door embodying a power cylinder and a piston rod therein operatively connected with said movable arm to move the same in a direction to move said door to closed position, operating means for moving said door to open position, and manually controlled means adapted to engage and frictionally hold said piston rod against movement, said means including a movable friction plate, and manually controlledlmeans for moving said plateointo frictional looking engagement with said piston rod.

In a device of the character described, inji'combination, a sliding door, a relatively stationary abutment, a movable arm carried by said door operatively connected with said abutment to move with the opening and closing ofthe door, closing mechanism for said door embodying a power cylinder and a piston rod therein operatively connected with said movable arm to move the same in a direction to move, said door to closed position, operating means'for moving said door to open position, and manually controlled means adapted toengage and frictionally hold said piston rod against movement, said means embodying a movable friction plate carried by said power cylinder and acooperating cam member manually operable to move said plate into frictional locking engagemen-t with said piston rod.
