ERATLER.
Application filed February 12, 1927. Serial No. 167,695.
This invention relates to derailers, more particularly to portable derailers which are adapted to cooperatively engage a rail for the purpose of derailing a vehicle crossing thereover.
It is among the objects of this invention to provide a portable derailing device which shall be of simple, compact and durable me- .chanical construction, which'shall embody a minimum of parts, and which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a derailing device of the abovedesignated character which shall be of. relatively light weight and which shall be adapted to cooperate with a rail and cross tie support to secure it in its operative position without the aid of any auxiliary clamping means.
Numerous forms of derailing devices have been heretofore proposed which are adapted to cooperatewith a rail and rail support in various manners, and some of these prior art devices are designed to be. portable in the. sense that they may be changed from place to place on account of being detachably secured to the rail or cross ties, or both. All of the prior art devices requires some fastening means usually in the form of clamping members embodying screws or jacks.
In accordance with the present invention it is proposed to provide a truly portable device in the sense that it can be removed from its location on a'rail without necessitating the removal of bolts, clamps or other clamping means and thedeviceis further adapted to be relocated by simply placing the derailing support on a cross tie member in engagement with the rail and placing the derailing member on the rail all in a manner as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters designate like parts, Fig. 1 is a plan view in elevation of a derailing device embodying the principlesof this invention; and Fig. 2 a side elevational view thereof.
Referring to the figures of the drawings the structure therein illustrated comprises a base or support 1. of substantially rectangular shape having a projecting portion 2 extending underneath the rail flange 3, Fig.
A derailing member 12 having ,a vertically flanged portion. 13, and a lip 14: that constitutes a track for the wheel flang e is pivoted to the support 1 at 11. The member 12 is generally formedunderneath to. a shape complementary to the form of rail with which it is adapted to be engaged. 7 They de railing member 12 is provided with a web portion 15 having a cylindrically shaped 111g 16 adapted to fit into thecounterbOreS of the base and being' furtherprovided with an opening centrally of thebody portion 16 through which the pin 11 is adapted to pass to pi votal'ly join the de'railing memb'er with the supporting base member 1.
The derailing member is provided with a depending flange portion 17 Fig. 2, adapted to engage the ball or side of the rail which functions to cooperate with the-hook 4 and flange 5 of the base to interlock the derailin g device with the rail and cross tie.
The device is assembled by disposing the base 1, with the derailing portion 13 laid back on its support, underneath the flange of the rail as shown in Fig. 2 with its depending flange 5 in juxtaposition with the cross tie 6. The base 1 is pulled back against the flange of the rail and placed against the side of the tie'to be in intimate contact with and prevents the derailing member from being displaced by the force of a wheel passing over it. The derailing member is otherwise locked against movement by the hooked end 4 of the projecting portion 2 of the base and the flange member 5 so that when the device is assembled in its operative position I it is fixed against movement Without the need of clamping means. A pin 20 may be placed in suitable openings provided in the pedestal 7 and the Web tolock the derailer in its operative position on the rail.
When it is desired to locate the derailing member in any position for an indefinite period of time, it may be desirable to secure it against theft and for this purpose an opening 18 is provided in the base for receivinga spike which may be driven in the cross tie 6. The fastening means is obviously not necjessary to makethe device suitable for use in the manner hereinbeforedescribed which is obvious from the foregoing description of.
, the structure and its function.
It ill be evident from the foregoing descr pt onot this invention that (lei-ailing devices made inaccordance therewith provide simple means for accomplishing the derailing of railway vehicles. It is further evi dent that the device may be nounted in its operativepositionand is capableot resisting the forces acting upon it in its derailing f1l11C- tion Without necessitating the use oi: clamping members as' in the prior art structures, 1t
is further evident that changes maybe made in the design and arrangement of the several coopeiating parts Without depart ng from the principlesof thisinvent ion.
WVe claim:
1; A portable device for derailing railway vehicles comprising in combination a base (member; andfa derailing member, said derailingmember being pivotally joined to said base1nember,and said base andfderailing linembers jbeingadaptedto cooperatively en gagea 'railand cross-tie to securely hold I said derailing member initsoperative posi-- tion.
2. A portable device for derailing railway vehicles comprising in combination a base tie to securely hold thedevice in its operative position. 1
3. A portable device for derailing railway men'ilr-erand a derailing member, said derailing member being pivotally joined to said base member, said base member having rail and cross tie engaging portions and the derailing member having a. rail engaging por ticn by means of which said members cooperlate to securely hold the device in its opera-" tive position. i
l. A portable device for derailing railivay vehicles. comprising .in combination-a base member and a derailing member, said derailing member being pivotally joined to said basemember, said base member having anezztencling portion provided vvith a hooked ,i'ehicles comprising in combination a base end projecting underneath the rail [and en- 4 gaging i.ail flange,. said base being fi r ther provided with a tie engaging'pon tion, and said derailing member having a 'flange for engaging the ball or ,headof the rail; i i i In' testimony whereof, We hereunto sign ournames. j 1 p G QRGEi-IJFRA IER.
