Be it known that I,.WINOENTY P. MEK- LEMBURG, a citizen of Poland, having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States'of America, residing at Adena, 1n the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Ties, o`f which the following is a specification.
T he primary object of the invention is the provision of a met-allie railway tie provided with ready means for detachably mounting railway rails in their operative position thereon, the structure possessing great strength and being easy to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a railway tie having securing plates while adjustable locking means are provided for the plates, releasable at will but normally securing the members firmly together when locked.
With these general objects in view, the
' invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forminga part of this application,

My invention comprises a metallic beam or tie 10 rectangular in cross section adapted for mounting a plurality of railway rails 11 transversely thereon in suitable spaced relations corresponding to the gage of the railroad.
A securing plate 12 is adapted for seating upon the tie 10 with an angularly projecting portion 18 overlying the adjacent 4base flange 14 of the rail 11. A similar although slightly larger plate 15 is mounted upon the opposite side of the rail 11 from the plate 12 with its angular portion V16 overlying the other base flange 17 of the rail.
Two bolts or screws 18 extend through the plate 12 into spaced sockets 19 in the tie and with threaded portions 2O of the bolts engaging a lower threaded extension 21 of the sockets 19. Heads 22 of the bolts 18 are positioned upon the plates 12. Spring pressed pins 23 are provided in the opposite sides of the tie and having inclined inner ends 24 adapted for ratcheting engagement with a spiral arrangement of recesses 25 upon the plane shaft portion 26 of the adjacent bolt 18. The bolt 18 being inserted in the socket 19 and threaded downwardly therein, the ends 24 of the pin 23 will ride over the periphery of the shaft portion 26 of the bolt until one of the recesses 25 is positioned to receivethe pin and lwhereupon the continued turning of the bolt causes the pin 23 to automatically seat into successive ones of said recesses 25. The engagement of the pin end 24 with a recess 25 prevents the retraction of the bolt until the pins 23 are released by pulling the pins outwardly by means of the heads 27 thereof against the action of the springs 28 encirclingthe pins.
The relatively larger plates 15 are provided with four similar bolts 18 and with locking means identical with that heretofore described and these elements will bear the same designations in the drawing.
It will be seen that upon properly positioning the plates 12 and 15 and inserting the bolts 18 that the turning of the bolts secures the plates firmly upon the top of the tie 10 overlying the base flanges of therails 11 while the locking means described prevents any removal of the bolts until released.

A device of the class described comprising a tie adapted for mounting rails thereon, securing plates upon the tie adapted for overlying the base flanges of a rail mounted upon the tie, bolts extending through said plates and threaded into the tie and locking means extending through side portions of the tie adapted for ratcheting engagement with the adjacent portions of the bolts.
2. A device of the class described comprising a metal tie, a rail transversely positioned thereon, plates upon opposite sides of the rail mounted upon the tie, the said tie having vertical sockets beneath said plates with threaded reduced lower portions, bolts extending through said plates into said sockets having threaded engagement with the lower extensions thereof and automatic locking means carried by the tie having ratcheting engagement with said bolts withinthe outer portions of said sockets.
