To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TORRIS H. ALrmcos', a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in'the county of Cook and State of Illino1s5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antiereeping Devices for Railroad-Rails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference ma rkcd thereon, which form a part oi. this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in anticreeping devices for railroad rails and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the up pended claims.
The object of the invention is to produce a device which is adapted to be attached to but one edge of a railroad rail and to so coact with the associated tie as to prevent the creeping movement of the rail under the acimproved anti-creeping t c tion of passing trains.
Another objcctof the invention is to pro vide such a device as can be made from a minimum of metal. and yet provide a maxi mum in efliciency for its intended purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device-as can be shipped as a sin is complete member, to the place of installation or attachment to the rail.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide such a device as can be secured to the tie adjacent the rail so as to provide a proper support for the device, in a. position facilitating its attachment to the rail.

Referring now in detail to that embodimetlkofmy invention illustrated in the acco'mnanying drawmgsz-5 indicates as a topinclined surfac whole the base of a railroad rail; 6 indicates e usual cross-tio upon. which the rail rests in a familiar manner; and 7 indicates as a Whole, my improved anti ercepin rail anchor, as it is sometimes ca led.
The anti-creeping device consists of a block comprising a horizontally disposed. bottom flange orancmber length, a top flange or member 9, which is inclined to the horizontal and which is sub stantially the same length as the bottom nnnnber the said members -bein integrally connected along one edge as at t e elbow or bond 10, and a vertically disposed flan e 11 which depends from one end of the lock and which is of a width equaling the combined Width of said bottom member and said elbow. A bracing web 11 connects said depending flange with the bottom surface of the pottonrmember 8.

When the depending flange engages the tie, the use of the sledge or maul ,is discontinued. The usual trackwrench is now brought into use by engaging itsjaws upon the head of the setscrew or bolt 18. Said setscrew is rotated in the usual manner, threadingthrough the nut 17 and engaging'and indenting'the top surface of the edge of the rail base, until further turning movement of said bolt is unnece sary. When the set screw is thus beingtightened,it--w1ll tend todraw up the bottom flange or-member into close engagement with the bottom of the rail base,- thus securely locking the block asra whole to the rail against any independent movement, the one relative to. the other. With the block this fixed to the rail, any creeping movement of the rail for any reason whatsoever, is resisted by the engagement of the block as a Whole with the tie.
Wave movement of the rail underthe load of passing train-s is resisted somewhat by reason of the entrance or penetration of the lug 19 into the tie and'evcn though said lug breaks off from the flange lljits prima function, which is that of holding the blue in position upon'theirailso' that the setscrew can be tightened, has been fully' performed. However, conditionsin the road bed might sometimes be such that even the wavelmotion of the rail will be-permanently resisted by said lugs 19. l

Again by placing the nut in the recess as described, instead of threading it through the boss, the lifting stress imparted to thetop member 9, by tightening the setscrew, is imparted to the said to member so that there is less danger of breaking the block as a whole through the elbow or bend 10. i v i It is apparent that each individual device can be made of less metal than other anticreepers having the same efficiency, because no hook for engaging the other edge of the rail base need be providedv for, to support the block with reference to the rail, during its application thereto.
1 y improved anti-creeping devices possesses other advantages in that, should there be a variation orthe block, due to its warping or shrinking, as it is made in the foundry, this warping or shrinking will. be of no moment because there is nocompanion engaging piece to be accommodated. Therefore, there is less waste of metal in the manufacturing thereof.

hile in describing my invention I have referred to' certain details in construction and formand in arrangement of parts, I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be pointed out inthe appended claims.
I claim as my invention: 1
1. A device of the kinddescribed comprismg a block adapted to engage against a tie, said block including top and bottom members adapted for engagement with one edge; of the base of a rail, a setscrew or bolt, and means inone of said members providing a screw threaded engagement for said bolt.
