'Be it known that I, l/Vnmmrr Boer, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles7 in the county of Lee and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful lin provenients in Railway Ties. of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to rail ties especially adapted for use in connection with railway tracks in and around mines, although not necessarily restricted to such use.
Briefly stated, an important object of the invention is to provide a tie having novel and improved rail clamping .means whereby a rail may beV quickly applied or removed from. the tie.V
Another'cbject of the invention is to provide a tie which is designed to dispense with the use of spikes, rail braces, etc.
Another object of the invention is to furnish a tie v-.fhich is sinrple in construction. durable and strong. highly eiiicient in 'ts purpose, and inexpensive of manufacture.

In the drawing, the numeral 5 generally designates a tie of any desired material provided at its ends with hooklike members 6 which overhang and. flatly engage the outer base flanges of the rails.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the ends of the tie are enlarged laterally to form bosses 7 which are apertured for the reception of fastening bolts 10. The fastening bolts also extend through depending elongated bosses 8 of a rail clamp 9 and it will be seen that when the bolts are tightened the clamp 9 and the adjacent hook 6 are securely and positively engaged with the base of the rail.
Fig. 1 plainly illustrates that the hooks 6 are formed at their opposite sides with arcu ate reinforcing ribs. The ribs uniformly increase in cross sectional area toward the laterally projecting enlargements 7 and not only form a reinforcing means for the hooks 6 but also substantially strengthen the laterally projecting' bosses 't'.
rlfhe clamps 9 are provided with elongated att-aching portions 1l slidable on the upper surface of the tie and having longitudinal slots 12 for the reception of guide lugs 13. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate that the upper side of each attaching portion 11 is provided with a recess or socket 16 which communicates with the slot 12 and which receives an extension 17 of the lug 13. When the extension 17 is received in the recess 16 the upward movement of the attaching portion 11 is prevented and thus the necessity for employing spikes to hold the rail engaging members in position is overcome.
It might here be stated that the depending portions S of the clamps 9 not only function as ears or bosses for the reception of the bolts 10, but also as guides to prevent lateral displacement of the clamps under any unusual stresses to which the same might be subA jected.
W'hen the rail has been placed upon the tie and the outer base iiange properly positioned beneath the hook 6, the clamgp 9 is then moved outwardly to engage the inner base flange of Vthe rail. The clamp is moved outwardly until the extension 17 of the lug 13 is seated in the recesses 16 whereby upward movement of the clamp is prevented.
After the rail has been properly positioned upon the tie, it is only necessary to apply and tighten the nuts on the bolts 10 and the clamp 9 will be drawn outwardly until the same together with the hook 6 engage the base flanges of the rail and thereby firmly and securely hold the rail in a. fixed position.
The tie is further provided on its under side with two oppositely arranged flanges 15 which in addition to strengthening the tie imbed themselves into the ground and serve to hold` the tie in a set position.`
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken merely as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within. the spirit of the invention. and the scope of what is claimed'.l
