UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUY H. ivroYER AND ROBERT F. AUGKER, or FREEBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING PIANO-SHIPPING CASE.
Application filed October 27, 1925. Serial No. 65,237.
This invention relates to improvements in knock-down or collapsible piano boxes which may be made of wood'or metal and adapted to be used any number of times by returning the box in its knock-down form for subsequent shipments of pianos.
The'various features of the'invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a piano box showing the parts assembled when box is closed.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. v
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the back of the box. Figure 4 is a perspective view of the piano 1 box showing the front disengaged from the top and half of the ends disengaged for the purpose of lowering the front preparatory to taking out or putting in a piano.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the piano box when in a knock-down condition.
Referring now to the drawings, our improved piano box comprises a back portion 1 to which rectangular top and bottom sections 2 and 3 respectively, are hinged. The side edges of the back 1 are connected to sectional side pieces 4 and 4 by hinges which are secured to the inner face of the back and side pieces.
The connected portions just described constitute the rear assembly of the piano box to which the front assembly, now to be described, is connected by detachable hinge portions as best shown in Fig. 4.
To the forward edges of the rear sectional side pieces 4 and 4 are connected, by detachable hinge sections 6 and 6, front sectional side pieces 5 and 5. the connected side pieces being held against folding inwardly, when set up as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by the angle irons 7 and Sand 7 and 8. which are secured to the inner faces of the top and bottom respectively.
To the forward vertical edge of the side pieces 5 and 5' is hinged the lower front section 10, and an upper front section 11' is v hinged to theupper edge of the lower section.
the detachable hinge portions 6 and 6 and closed piano, the pintles are removed from 12, which will permit of the front assembly to be swung down on the hinge connections 13, as shown in'Fig. 4. If desired the front assembly can be entirely detached from the,
rear assembly by also removing the pintles from the detachable hinges 13 as shown in the knock-down position shown in Fig. 5.
After the piano has been removed from the box, and it is desired to return the box for subsequent shipments, the front and rear assemblies may be folded separately and laid one upon the other, as shown in Fig. 5, or the pintles may be replaced in the hinge portions .6 and, with the pintles removed from the detachable hinge portions 12 and 13,'the top ,2 and bottom 3 may be folded back upon the outer surface of the back 1, as is also shown in Fig. '5. The angle irons 7 and 8 and 7 and 8 are thus removed from behind the foldable side sections 4 and 5 and 4 and 5,, permitting these sections to be folded inwardly between the front sections 10 and 11 and the back 1, as will be readily understood.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. A foldable piano box comprising front and rear portions, said front portion comprising a front wall and side walls hingedly connected thereto, said rear portion comprising a rear wall having top, bottom and side walls hingedly connected thereto, and detnchnhic hinge sections connecting said front and rear portions.
2. In a piano shipping box the con'ihiimtion of a buck, the top, basc and siclcs having an edge of each hingedly secured thereto, a front. defachzibiv scoured to the base and top by detachable hinge sections and having side sections hingcdiy socum'ui to the sides of said Front, and detachable hinge sections connectins;- the side sections of said front and back. 10
1'11 testimony whereof we ufli); our signai'lncs.
